Buddhism is appealing to me and I want to start practising it but I don’t know how to start

I’ve been studying Buddhism for a little over a year now in college and the peaceful nature of searching for enlightenment is really appealing to me and is something I really want to practise, i currently have a quite negative personality and I want that to change so I can be more kind. However I’m not sure where to start or what denomination of Buddhism would be right. I know that I think Buddha was an ordinary man and not some magical man or anything and I think Mahayana is quite heavy on the mythical side of things but I might be wrong. Is there any books I can read to help me on my path? Any help will be greatly appreciated Edit: I forgot to mention I’ve been brought up Christian and have lose Christian beliefs, I don’t actively follow a Christian lifestyle but I do believe in God and Jesus etc
