Carl Jung: Finding the right measure is also a way of relating to the world.

To Emma von Pelet

Dear Frau Von Pelet, Bollingen, 4 April 1949

Your gift was a great joy!

Joh. Peter Hebel is our Basel poet par excellence, and I spent my whole youth at the mouth of the Wiese, of which Hebel sang.

I fear you have deprived yourself in leaving this heirloom to me.

My heartiest thanks!

What comes to you from the world, and what you answer, constitute your relation to the world.

Just this is “going out into the world.”

For the time being you are doing so in the disguise of translations.

This is as good a work as any other.

Fruitful introversion is possible only when there is also a relation to the outside.

If Shanti is too much for you, you must draw in your horns until you have found a tolerable mean.

You shouldn’t let yourself be put upon-that would be a serious weakness.

Finding the right measure is also a way of relating to the world.

With cordial thanks and kind regards,

Yours sincerely,

C.G. Jung, ~Carl Jung, Letters Vol. 1, Page 527.
