Of Nato, 'freeloaders' and the new sheriff in town

As far as President Trump is concerned, Nato is “as bad as Nafta” and too costly for the US. The US president sees majority of America's Nato allies as freeloaders.

Therefore, as Nato leaders gather in Brussels in a few days time for the alliance’s annual summit it will be interesting to see what they come up with.

It has been confirmed that the only topic on the table for discussion at the Brussels summit is collective defence. If the truth be told, this is one of the few foreign policy topics on which the US president has been consistent.

However, western leaders may have to reconcile themselves to the fact that Mr Trump's transactional approach to business is mirrored in his approach to foreign policy, it is all about the money.

Interestingly, only four of the alliance’s European members currently meet the self-imposed target of 2 per cent of GDP — the UK, Estonia, Poland and Greece — another four have committed to reach it by the end of the year.
