2026 FIFA World Cup to be held in the US

It has just been announced that the final of the first 48-team World Cup will be held at the MetLife Stadium in Rutherford New Jersey, 32 years after Pasadena’s Rose Bowl hosted the 1994 showpiece

The president of Fifa, Gianni Infantino, has awarded the North American United bid team the World Cup 2026 tournament. The United team comprising the US, Canada and Mexico celebrated wildly after it was announced they had won by a landslide vote at the Fifa congress.

A purring US Soccer Federation President Carlos Cordeiro said: "This is an emotional day.

"Thank you so much for this incredible honour and entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the World Cup."

The decision to choose the North American bid was welcomed by Major League Soccer.  The American soccer body said:
“The decision to host World Cup 2026 in Canada, Mexico and the United States is a testament to our three nations coming together for the United Bid, and a monumental step in our collective mission to further advance the game of soccer in North America.

"We congratulate all of those who worked tirelessly to bring the World Cup back to North America and thank the countries that voted for the United Bid, and for their belief in our vision for the future of the sport in our region.

"There is no doubt that World Cup 2026 will elevate the sport of soccer to entirely new levels and Major League Soccer is honored to be a part of this joyous day.”
