The president of the European Council and former prime minister of Poland denied involvement in the death of President Kaczynski who perished in an aeroplane crash in Russia eight years ago
Mr Tusk was giving evidence in a trial of former officials from his office. These officials had been accused of negligence over the crash in Smolensk, Russia, in 2010.
The air crash, which claimed 96 lives including that of President Kaczynski and senior military and political figures has continued to generate conspiracy theories in Poland. This was despite two official inquiries having put the blame mainly on pilot error in appalling flying conditions.
Donald Tusk
Mr Tusk told the panel of three judges:
“I dealt with drastically unfair accusations that I and Putin [the Russian president] orchestrated an attack. I was not politically responsible for organising this visit . . . It is not in any measure the role of the prime minister to handle organisational details.”
