Russia used Ukraine and Syria to test hybrid warfare techniques

General Sir Richard Shirreff served as Britain’s top officer in Nato from 2011 to 2014

Both General Sir Richard Shirreff and General Sir Richard Barrons, a former commander of Joint Forces Command are of the opinion that the Russians are using Ukraine and the Syrian war to test hybrid warfare techniques such as the co-ordination of fake news with bombs and bullets.

                         General Barrons

The two generals believe Britain is being targeted with the same weapons, from disinformation put out by state-sponsored media outlets to the military-grade nerve agent attack in Salisbury.

Hear General Shirreff:
“This is not the Kremlin in a state of conventional war but a framework of thinking that says you are in a state of perpetual conflict.”

It would be recalled that thousands of emails sent by Moscow-linked figures outlined a campaign of dirty tricks in Ukraine, which was invaded on the orders of President Putin in 2014. The emails revealed what the Kremlin would pay for hacking, propaganda and rent-a-mob rallies.
