US pupils say no to gun violence

Do not bet against it.  It may be that the young, to whom the future belongs, may succeed where their elders have failed.

It was therefore hardly surprising that hundreds of thousands of pupils walked out of classrooms across the US yesterday to commemorate the 17 teenagers and teachers killed in the Parkland school massacre and to protest against gun violence.

Cameron Kasky, a pupil, said
“The world hasn’t forgotten those we’ve lost and those who have had to fight for their lives in the hospital. This isn’t just another mass shooting. This is different. We’ve made a promise. The world is changing.”

The school massacre has justifiably led to the foundation of a powerful student-led gun reform movement. In Florida legislation was passed last week that introduced gun reforms and tightened school safety but fell short of the demand for a ban on assault weapons.
