'I don't' : Putin's former son-in-law not only lost his wife, he lost a fortune

Kirill Shamalov forfeited hundreds of millions of pounds as a result of the separation

Ordinarily, when you marry a President's Daughter, the chances are that a path to success is guaranteed.  However, a man who did so has discovered the flipside after separating from president Putin's daughter.

According to an investigation by the Bloomberg financial news agency, things appear to have gone sour and Mr Shamalov, 35, has had to forgo hundreds of millions of pounds after splitting from his wife.

Katerina Tikhonova, Putin's daughter and Shamalov's former wife

Ms Tikhonova, 31, is Mr Putin’s youngest daughter with his former wife, Lyudmila.  She works as a project manager at Moscow State University.  An accomplished acrobatic rock’n’roll dancer, she has taken part in various tournaments.

Shamalov’s future looked rosy when he and Ms Tikhonova were joined in marriage five years ago.

A year later the young businessman got a £915 million loan from Gazprombank and used it to buy a 17 per cent stake in Sibur, Russia’s leading gas and petrochemicals processor.

After the separation, Mr Shamalov “made zero” when he sold the shares, because he was allowed to hold them in a kind of trust only as a member of the Putin family.  That ownership privilege ended when the marriage collapsed, sources said.
