Give of Yourself

Do you take the time to give of yourself for the world? No, this does not mean giving in a way where you know you'll receive something in return, but really giving in a sacrificial way, for the benefit of those around you. Most of us don't, even if we try, it often ends up being a failed attempt and we get something un return, or we feel a sense of pride for the good that we've done. It's part of being human, and we all do it. However, God shows us that we should be people who are self-sacrificial, self-giving and do it all in His name, not for any form of personal Gain. It's a big part of our mission as disciples. I know for myself, it's difficult to always be only openly self-sacrificing. How do you embrace being self-sacrificing?
Today's Gospel states: 'He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury; and he saw a Poor Widow put in two copper coins. And he said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all the living that she had"' (Luke 21:1-4).
Today's reading talks about how we need to be people who give what we can and let that be enough. So many of us have more than we really need in order to live in our daily lives and could probably give much to those who really need it, even if that be time. Consider how much time today you spent scrolling through social media, talking on the phone. Was it a solid hour or two total? Think about how that could add up in a week. You could spend a few nights a week helping as a volunteer at your parish, maybe step out and meet a friend who could use some support. How is God trying to push you towards being a self-sacrificing disciple? Take some time to pray and ask God to help you learn where He is calling you to give to others.
Today we pray:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for showing me what it means to be a person who loves unconditionally and in a self-sacrificing way. Help me to better give of myself and not hope to gain anything in return.
I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
