Here they are, ranked from 17 to 1. All of them inspired us through 2016 with their rich lyrics, powerful focus on God and obviously great storytelling.

Rich Lyrics, Strong Focus On God

One of the best things about Christian music is that choice of topic.

Music that speaks about God immediately offers the inspirational menu of rich lyrics and a strong focus on God.

So, how did we arrive at the final selection?

We’ve already given you a sneak peak above. Lyrics and message played a big part.

However, we poured over hundreds of comments, did our own survey and of course looked at the message within the song.

At the end of the day, we were looking for songs that had the promise to transform, heal, rejoice, and refresh BOTH the heart and soul.

You see, a good song is not just about feeling good, it’s about bringing you closer to God OR giving you a real revelation of His Presence.

We see it in each of these songs.

The artists shared lyrics straight from their heart and made us cry, rethink, rejoice and ultimately think deeper about God.

In fact, looking deeper, each song has a story behind the story, and that’s what captured our imagination.

Many people can relate to those stories. Lots of others have (and continue to) use some of these songs are prayers, a prayer lifted up to God at a time when your words weren’t enough.

And all 17 songs came at just about the right time. With all the uncertainty of 2016, you needed an extra boost to get you over the hill…and these songs did just that.

57 of the people we surveyed had 15 of the 17 songs as part of their favorite playlist.

90% voted for the top song as their best Christian song of 2016.

The Number 2 song was tops for 76% of fans.

Number 5 was a real surprise for me. I thought it would be higher.

But all in all, these artists stood head and shoulders above all others. They offered us hope, undiluted purpose and love for God and victory.

You see, all around us, you see evidence that people’s love for God has waxed cold. The good news is that the Christian songs we listened to in 2o16 didn’t wax cold. They fired us up, revived us, encouraged us along the way and enabled us to fall in love with God all over again.

And judging by the comments from worship leaders, music fans, this conviction was felt across the board.
