The Moto G9 Plus is part of Motorola’s latest range of affordable smartphones, which aims to bring top-notch features at a price that won’t break the bank. It has a 6.81-inch screen, a solid battery and a decent camera that should satisfy most people’s needs.

Performance on the Moto G9 Plus is solid, too, thanks to an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G. It’s the same chipset you’ll find inside a Google Pixel 4a, and it delivers snappy day-to-day use and a fair few smooth games.

Camera

If you’re looking for a good budget camera, the Moto G9 Plus is an excellent choice. It’s got a modern design, a big battery and a 64MP sensor.

There’s no telephoto lens but the 8MP ultra-wide angle, 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensors do a decent job. Video is 4K at 30fps and HDR is built in.

The front 16MP camera sits in an unobtrusive punch-hole at the top left of the screen and is a fine performer, too. Selfies are sharp and detailed, with the exposure metering competent enough to keep them well-exposed even in more challenging conditions.

Display

The G9 Plus has a big 6.81-inch screen, one of the biggest around at the moment. It’s an IPS panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels and HDR10 support.

It’s a good screen for media consumption and general use, with a nice level of contrast. Max brightness is solid too, and blacks are quite deep despite being an IPS panel.

Colour accuracy is also decent, with a cover of 93.6% of the sRGB spectrum and a very generous colour gamut volume, which helps to keep the images on this screen looking more natural than some cheaper budget screens.

The Moto G9 Plus’s screen also uses adaptive brightness to optimise brightness based on the lighting in the room you’re using the phone in. This makes it easier to see and read the display in low light conditions, especially if you’re watching movies or browsing the web at night.

Performance

The G9 Plus has everything you’d expect from a mid-range phone at PS200 – a good screen, a decent camera and a powerful battery. And it does all of this with a 2.2GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G chip inside, the same one found in Google’s Pixel 4a (which costs PS150 more).

The main camera is 64MP and features a pixel binning technique to capture more detail than you’d get from a single lens camera at this price. It’s accompanied by an ultra-wide-angle, depth and macro sensor to help you capture more of the scene around you.

Battery

Battery life is an area where recent Motorola phones have often excelled, and the G9 Plus is no exception. It packs a 5,000mAh battery, which is claimed to offer 147 hours of music or 19 hours of video on a single charge.

It also comes with a TurboPower 30 charging tech that in theory will give you 12 hours of extra power with only 10 minutes on the charger, which is pretty impressive stuff for a phone at this price point.

The G9 Plus may not be the most impressive phone in terms of hardware, but it does offer a number of features that make it stand out from the crowd. It has a bigger screen, more memory, faster charging and a camera that takes some seriously good shots. The software is also well designed and cleverly utilises the latest Android technologies. The most noteworthy is the Power Touch feature that double-tap the power button to present up to six app shortcuts at once.
