The Curiosity Index: Week 5

Here are things I’ve read, watched and discovered as my Curiosity got the better of me this week. It was a bit delayed but better late than never. Probably.

Some interesting things (to me)

Seven posts that caught my eye.

  1. We Use 6 Billion Face Masks a Day—But Scientists Have a Genius Way to Turn Them Into Roads. Masks I’ve worn so far = 0.
  2. Daughters provoke parental strife. Apparently, if your first child is a girl AND if the father did not have a sister then the chances of divorce go up when your daughter hits her teens because of the arguments about how to respond to their choices.
  3. Sunk Cost Bias – getting trapped in our mistakes. “In fact, at its most basic level, sunk cost bias is a failure to learn. It places so much emphasis on what has happened in the past it prevents you from exploring possible futures. But to make those futures a reality you have to let go of the sunk costs that are dragging you under with them.”
  4. First Jesus: Here’s something new I learned – “The first pictorial representation of Jesus Christ is insulting Roman graffiti that gives him a donkey’s head.”
  5. How to Read More: 8 Reasons and 7 Strategies to Read More Books
  6. The best (and strangest) new gadgets from CES 2021. I know this is from a month ago but the glasses idea is really clever.
  7. One of the side effects of this pandemic is seeing people try new things. Jonny Raine a pastor and reader of the CI has been hard at work on his Youtube channel including a set on Revelation. They come from an amillennial idealist perspective but is intended to be gracious to other perspectives. Take a look and thanks Jonny for sharing.

Seven Twitter highlights

  1. Very sweet.
  2. A literary cliffhanger
  3. It starts with the invite
  4. Stephen King’s writing tips summarized
  5. A Back to the Future mind-blowing revelation…
  6. Everyday mission requires everyday missionaries
  7. We need a disgust for the world to acquire an appetite for grace

Living in a XXX culture: “It is the teens of today who are the first to grow up (not with pornography, that’s always been around) but with free pornography, filmed pornography (one of the reasons why Playboy is passé now) and extreme pornography.”

Have a great week!
