Oh Ok Then!

Tags: turn heat warm

Oh, what's that?  You want me to get more into my Heat management the last few weeks?  Oh ok then!

(Oh wait, you don't but I feel like talking about it anyway?  Oh ok then! ha!)

Usually I Turn my radiators off in the middle of March.  I even have a note on my calendar to remind me which way to turn them as they're installed what is essentially backwards, so you have to reach your hand around like... backwards bendy and turn in a direction and I've over thought it too many times and it's not actually obvious so I have it written down!

This March, that wasn't happening.  In fact, I was freezing!  There were times I couldn't get the heat in my place above 19, which is frustrating because I've learned the building takes readings off of my friend's apartment (and a few others) and her place is often roasting when I'm freezing.  But I was making do.

All through April I'd turn it off and then back on again and I ended up leaving it slightly on most of the time.  But I figured by May we'd be done, but no!

At some point a few weeks ago my neighbour-friend let me know that with her radiators shut off they were still giving off heat and boiling her, so she asked them to turn the entire system down.

So... I went back to freezing.

And I mean I'll be honest, by "freezing" I mean "cold for this time of year" not like actual freezing.  Just dramatic freezing!

My neighbour messaged me about a week later saying she was now freezing and had to turn her radiator back on, so yeah, this caught lots of people by surprise, but also I figure when they turn down the entire system (which I don't agree with doing) the entire building cools, not just one or two apartments.  (I've put a note in my calendar for early Fall to ask them to "balance" the system as there's no way I should be so cold when someone else is having too much heat output... it didn't use to be this way.)

So for the last two weeks I've had my radiator basically fully on (open) and it wasn't really doing much, but at least I was ok enough.  I've had nights where I had to throw on extra blankets and close down my bedroom windows, so it's been chilly at night too.

Like I mentioned, over this weekend, we got rain and humidity (I think anyway) and one of those nights I woke up to pee and was so Warm I was down to a sheet.  It took about 45 minutes for me to cool down enough to pull a blanket back up and go to sleep and on Sunday I actually wondered if I should put a fan in my bedroom to get air circulating and maybe "dry" things out or something?  I dunno.

I've had my radiators off for three or four days now, and I put the hot water bottle away the other night.  Two nights ago I was in a nightdress for lounging and last night I was back in my fuzzy warm pjs (and rotating socks!) but I feel like I could almost almost put away the last winter blanket.... almost?  I'll probably give it a few weeks straight of being folded down and not used before I put it away because these cold nights seem to come out of nowhere and they're COLD y'all!  Brrrr!

But Winter jacket has now been too warm twice, so I feel like things are absolutely not Winter cold and it's possible that my apartment in particular has some weird cold vortex thing going on that other places (like work) don't as I sometimes go out with too many layers on and end up carrying jackets but in my place I'd be like radiator and blanket and hot water bottle so, yeah, it's, well it's not uniform I guess.  It's back and forth and up and down and I feel like we're going to hit some warm patches soon and I won't know how to handle that, but who knows!

Like I said, I'm good with the cold, just not with the reason(s) behind the why of it.
