"I Don't Like Spam!"

Spam, Spam, spam, spammity spaaaaaaam!

I have, I believe, been hit by a spam bomb.  KAPOW!

Or.. something.

I'm pretty convinced it happened when I was camping last month and wanted to check in on C-Dawg who was going through some rough stuff so signed on to the campground's wifi (I have no cell service where the campground is, so this was the only option to receive/send texts/messages.)

While I had access to the wifi, I checked my email and sent some messages and checked the weather forecast (repeatedly.)

When I got home and settled, I checked my email and I had seven hundred and thirty seven spam messages.  SEVEN HUNDRED!!!!  Never in the history of ever have I had that amount build up.  (Yes, I empty my spam folder on the regular, so sue me!  I don't like full mailboxes!)

I was furious, and told Jason and told him I blamed the wifi... not that I understand how that works, but it's a pretty big co-incidence in my view that this happened after I used it?

He said it could have been just literally co-incidence and I just got added to some list and it's not like I can really blame anyone, but I did google "spam bomb" and they suggested I check all my online accounts to make sure no one was using the bombing of spam to hide a legit purchase scam sort of thing, so I felt dumb for mass deleting all seven hundred something and started at least glancing at the new ones that come through.

Most of them are about ladies wanting to have the sex with me and my (non existent) ding dong (to be polite), many of them are about american tax refunds or winnings of some sort I need to collect, or about my computer virus protection running out.  None of them look like legit emails - not in the subject line, and certainly not in the body of the email.  Initially the virus software one got through the spam filter and I did wonder for a minute if I'd forgotten I'd purchased that software and so I did open that one, ooops.

It's frustrating, and I wish it would stop (the internet says there's nothing to be done other than wait it out) and if I didn't care about empty mailboxes I might not notice but I do, and I am on a (Burning Man related) mailing list that has gotten thrown into spam a few times (I should probably do something about that... sigh) so I do keep checking and sometimes it's a few an hour, and sometimes it's a chunk of a few an hour.  Sigh.  I wake up most mornings to about 20 and it's a glance, delete all, sigh...

But yeah, I guess next time I go out of cell service for a while I'll just leave it as out of cell service... even if I'm desperate to know when the rain might hit.
