Open thread: How do you feel about the Lions’ running back room?

There will be some changes to the group behind D’Andre Swift.

On Thursday, the Detroit Lions made it official, cutting 2018 second-round pick Kerryon Johnson. The Auburn Tiger had trouble staying healthy and only totaled eight rushing touchdowns in Detroit. His release finalizes a disappointing tenure with the Lions.

With Johnson and (thankfully) Adrian Peterson gone, the position group will look a bit different in 2021. Jamaal Williams will take over the role of RB2, rookie Jermar Jefferson suddenly has a much better shot at making the roster, and either Jason Cabinda or Nick Bawden should earn the fullback job.

Today’s Question of the Day is:

How do you feel about the Lions’ running back room?

My answer: Despite the changes at RB2 and RB3, the biggest impact might be Year 2 for D’Andre Swift. The second-rounder found the end zone 10 times during his first professional season and looks primed for an even bigger role this year, especially with Jared Goff under center. This group’s ceiling starts and stops with Swift.

However, it is hard to see how Williams is not an improvement over Peterson and Johnson. The former Packer was well-regarded in Green Bay and has played the complementary very well during his four-year career. Even if Jefferson turns into nothing more than an average seventh-round selection, Running back should not be an issue for the Lions this season.

Your turn.
