D’Andre Swift misses practice with concussion, Stafford returns

It looks far too late in the week for D’Andre Swift to pass concussion protocol before Sunday’s game.

After making headlines with a breakout performance in his first career NFL start, D’Andre Swift may not have an encore this week. The Detroit Lions running back did not practice on Thursday because he is currently suffering from a concussion. Given that he’s in the concussion protocol this late in the week, it seems unlikely he’ll play this week against the Carolina Panthers.

Last week against the Washington Football Team, Swift had a season-high 16 carries for 81 yards and pulled in five catches for another 68. It seemed the coaching staff had finally given Swift the reigns of the offense. However, with this concussion, the load is likely to go back to veteran Adrian Peterson, who has averaged just 3.8 yards per carry this season.

The good news for Detroit is that quarterback Matthew Stafford returned to practice and appears on track to play despite his thumb injury. Additionally, Marvin Jones Jr. and Austin Bryant also returned to practice after missing Wednesday.

But receiver Kenny Golladay sat out on Thursday after practicing on Wednesday. If he can’t go, it will be three straight games missed due to a hip injury.

Here’s the full report from Thursday.

WR Danny Amendola (hip) - No practice
RB D’Andre Swift (concussion) - No practice (new injury)
WR Kenny Golladay (hip) - No practice (downgrade)

For the Panthers, not much has changed. Left tackle Russell Okung missed Thursday’s practice, but he is not expected to play this week anyways. The big news is that quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is no longer expected to play this week, per NFL Network. Head coach Matt Rhule admitted Bridgewater has been “extremely limited” in practice thus far.

Here is their full report:
