The Lions could be looking to add a young, versatile safety.

The Detroit Lions are certainly not done in free agency, and their first reported free agency visit has been revealed. According to the Detroit Free Press’ Dave Birkett, the Lions are hosting former Buccaneers safety Andrew Adams for a visit on Thursday.

Adams is a young player (26), who has worked his way up from being an undrafted prospect out of UConn—where, as Dave notes, he played under Paul Pasqualoni—to a significant contributor in all three of his years in the NFL.

He started out with the New York Giants, playing in 30 games over his first two seasons. Over that time, he started 17 games, amassed 80 tackles, notched seven passes defended and tallied his first interception. However, he lost the camp battle for a spot on the Giants roster in 2018.

Last year, Adams snuck onto the Buccaneers’ roster in late September, and made his arrival known in December, when he picked off Cam Newton three times in a single game.

Adams certainly fits the Lions’ buzz word of “versatility,” as he’s basically evenly split his time as a box or free safety over the past two seasons. His rookie year he was mostly in the free safety role, where his quickness and ability to read quarterbacks were showcased. However, his physicality has made him an option as more of a box safety lately.

With the Lions parting ways with Glover Quin a few weeks ago and Tavon Wilson looming as a potential cap casualty, Adams could slide in and be Detroit’s third safety, floating around wherever the Lions see fit.
