A brief summary from Thursday’s brief Practice.

Today’s observations are going to be short, because the Detroit Lions finished their joint practices on Thursday with a brief walkthrough in a mild drizzle. Not only does that limit the amount of observations I can make, but the majority of practice was spent on special teams, leaving even less to be drawn from.

But I know you’re all hungry for some news, so I’ll do my best from a quiet day.

Frank Ragnow back at left guard

The pads were off and the team was practicing nowhere near full speed, but Graham Glasgow continued to practice on Thursday after Tuesday’s injury scare. But unlike the day before, Glasgow was back at center, sliding rookie Frank Ragnow to left guard—where he has been the majority of camp.

Considering Glasgow did not play during any contact drills on Wednesday, it would be surprising to see him play during Friday’s preseason game. That leaves Ragnow with the possibility of getting some gametime reps at center against the Giants. It would be valuable practice for the rookie, but he’s only had one session at the position, and the Lions clearly plan on having Ragnow at left guard for the season.

T.J. Lang still out

Lang has dressed all week, but he has barely practiced at all. Even though the Lions were just doing walkthroughs on Thursday, Lang sat the session out.

This was a lot like how the Lions treated Lang last year during the regular season, as Lang battled through several injuries. Perhaps Lang is still dealing with some of these ailments, perhaps the Lions are just giving the 30 year old the veteran treatment. Either way, it’s something to keep an eye on as the regular season nears.

Jamal Agnew getting some time with the ones

Agnew made an impact his rookie year thanks to phenomenal special team play. This year, he has a serious chance to make an impact on defense.

During early walkthroughs on Thursday, Agnew was with the starters as the nickel corner. Darius Slay and Nevin Lawson were on the outside, while Glover Quin and Quandre Diggs manned the safety positions. Tavon Wilson, who didn’t appear injured or limited in practice, was the odd man out.

Darius Slay: Field goal returner?

Both teams worked on scenarios in which the opposing team was kicking long field goals. The player the Lions had back deep to return any field goals that came up short was none other than All Pro cornerback Darius Slay. He seemed to enjoy the responsibility, as he danced down field with the ball, pretending to score a touchdown, even though the teams were walking through the motions.

When the Lions were kicking, Ryan Santoso came up short from 60 yards. It’s unclear if he was asked to kick it short or if he couldn’t make it there, but his kick fell about five yards deep into the end zone, well short of the uprights. Later, Santoso nailed kicks from 40 and 50 yards.
