The Lions continue to make moves, and are now down to 78 players.
The Roster moves are starting to come quickly now, and according to the Detroit Lions website, defensive end Giorgio Newberry is the latest to be waived. The Lions have also waived-injured wide receiver Dez Stewart and cornerback Tramain Jacobs.
Newberry was acquired back on August 16 by the Lions after Brandon Copeland suffered a torn pectoral. He didn’t do much to impress Lions coaches and while this could have to do with the Lions taking Ezekiel Ansah off the PUP list, it’s more likely that Newberry just never really had much of a chance to make the final roster.
Jacobs and Stewart were both signed by the Lions on August 7. Jacobs was the very definition of a camp body. Added to an already crowded cornerback position, Jacobs had less than a month to make an impression on Lions coaches.
Jacobs signed with the Lions on August 7, but spent all of 2016 off of an NFL roster. He was put in an incredibly tough spot with the Lions and unfortunately couldn’t overcome overwhelming odds.
Stewart was signed by the Steelers earlier this season, but was released by them in early May. This was Stewart’s fifth team since being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2016 and he never really had much of a chance to make the final roster.
The Lions have the opportunity to keep Stewart and/or Jacobs on IR if they happen to clear waivers, assuming they want to.
The Lions’ roster is now down to 78 players.
