Former Lions OT Michael Ola signs to Seahawks practice squad, Gabe Wright promoted to Browns 53-man roster

A few former Lions are getting new opportunities elsewhere.

When the Detroit Lions released offensive tackle Michael Ola, it was one of the bigger surprises of cut day. After all, Ola was picked up in late 2015 to replace the poor play and injuries from Corey Robinson and Cornelius Lucas, both of which ended up making the 53-man roster this year. Ola did miss the last few weeks of Practice due to an injury, so that likely played a big factor.

Regardless, Ola now has a new opportunity in the NFL as the Seattle Seahawks signed him to their Practice Squad, according to ESPN’s Michael Rothstein. Ola was eligible to the practice squad thanks to the NFL’s new rule allowing four players with no more than two acquired seasons to join the 10-man team.

Ola wasn’t the only former Lions player to get a new opportunity elsewhere on Tuesday. In Cleveland, the Browns promoted defensive tackle Gabe Wright from the practice squad to their active 53-man roster.

Wright was a fourth-round pick just a year ago, but the Lions found themselves at a surplus of defensive linemen this year, and Wright was lost in the numbers game. Though it was surprising Wright didn’t land on Detroit’s practice squad, his performance wasn’t good enough to warrant a spot on Detroit’s roster.

The Lions didn’t make any roster moves themselves on Thursday, but they did bring in a few players for tryouts:

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the Lions may be looking for secondary help after allowing the second-most passing yards (368) in Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts.
