Self-Sacrifice 101

There are times when I put everyone else’s needs and desires before my own.

I think I’m doing it for all the right reasons.

But that’s not true.

I’m doing it because I want to avoid something.

It might be anger, frustration or hurt feelings.

So instead of being honest and facing the problem head on I lie.

I reason that this self-sacrifice is good for everyone – except me.

And that’s what counts the most.

If you’re anything like me you may have done it too.

You may have given when you didn’t’ want to.

You may have gone when you’d have rather stayed home.

You may have volunteered for a cause you didn’t believe in just because you were asked.

Or you may have said nothing when you really wanted to speak.

Why do we do this?

Several reasons.

Fear.

Rejection.

Uncertainty.

The good part is that it’s all just a story you’ve telling yourself because none of it is true.

You are the only one who gets to choose what you do and when you do it.

If the other person is upset that’s okay because that’s their business.

That’s their choice.

You don’t have to be a part of their anger unless you really want to.

You can choose to focus on your thoughts about why what you want is best for you.

You can share your reasons – but you don’t have to.

You can choose to be the victim and blame everyone else or you can take control of your life and do as you darn well please.

The only one who controls what you do and say and think and believe is you.

The sooner you Realize this and begin living in that place of self-assuredness the better.

Then your days of being a dutiful student in the class called self-sacrifice 101 will be over.

Then you’ll get to choose what you do and when you do it.

You’ll realize you don’t have to explain or justify or feel guilty of your choices.

What I love best about being a life coach is helping my clients realize they alone make that decision.

It’s also great when I realize I get to make that choice as well.

What do you wish you could just stop doing?

Why do you want to stop doing it?

When will you give yourself permission to stop doing it?

What will your life be like when you don’t have to do it anymore?

What can you do today to stop doing it?

You deserve to live a happy life and no one can do it for you.

It’s your life and your choice.

I’m grateful I get to put my desires first and invite you to join me as a proud graduate of self-sacrifice 101.
