Brazier Coffee, Uffculme

If you like the sound of freshly brewed coffee and kimchi quesadillas, you’ll want to head down to Coldharbour Mill this Summer and check out Brazier Coffee.

The last time I visited Coldharbour Mill I was about 10 years old and dressed from head to toe in Victorian garb. I was on a school trip to the working wool museum and I can honestly say that avo toast and flat whites were not very high on the agenda. Fast forward sixteen years and I arrived again at the mill on a particularly sunny morning with very different expectations…

Their specialist machines make a mean cup of coffee

Who are Brazier Coffee Roasters?

Brazier Coffee first began in the Australian outback, when founders Claire and Tom found themselves sipping on quality coffee and wondering why there was nothing similar here in the West Country. After much tasting and talking, they bought their own Giesen roaster and set up a tin-shed roastery in the Somerset countryside. They now own four separate coffee shops and run their own wholesale coffee roasters in Wellington.

The cafe is trendy and contemporary

Coldharbour Mill Cafe

The Brazier coffee shop at Coldharbour Mill is light and airy, with contemporary decor, plenty of seating and a fabulous array of cakes and pastries beckoning to you from the countertop. When we entered, we were greeted by the friendly and enthusiastic Isaac who put together some great flat whites for us as we browsed the menu.

Given founder Claire’s Australian heritage, it should come as no surprise that the menu at Brazier Coffee reads like a trendy Aussie cafe. There’s plenty on offer for vegetarians and vegans, and lots of children’s choices too. Ordinary brunch offerings of sweet pancakes, bircher oats and avocado toast rub shoulders with some more unique breakfast additions such as the Brazier breakfast burger, black pudding bon bons and veggie burritos.

During our visit, we opted to try the Kimchi Quesadillas (£8) and a Sweetcorn Fritter Stack (£8.50). When they arrived at the table, we were pleased to find that both of plates of food were vibrant and colourful, piled high with clean flavours and fresh ingredients.

A delicious sweetcorn stack.

Homemade kimchi flavours their quesadillas.

Fans of kimchi will love the moreish quesadillas, as the homemade kimchi is flavoursome-yet-subtle and works beautifully with the smashed avocado and tangy cheddar cheese. Add a spoonful of fresh tomato salsa into the mix and you’re on to a winner. Meanwhile, the sweetcorn fritter stack was surprisingly light considering how large the portion was. It is served on a bed of homemade refried black beans with smashed avocado, tomato salsa and a topping of fresh watercress. We’re big fans of the sweetcorn fritter and we were not at all disappointed by Brazier Coffee’s delicious take on the dish.

Would we recommend Brazier Coffee?

I would certainly recommend popping into one of Brazier Coffee’s cafes in Devon or Somerset. As expected, the freshly ground coffee was delicious. These guys know how to make a proper brew and you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding between a latte or an espresso. The menu is healthy and tasty in equal measure and the service is top notch!
