The Assembly Ground Cafe is situated next to The Assembly Ground shop in The Cathay building on Handy Road that houses the historic Cathay cinema.  The Shop next door sells clothes and bags while The Cafe is a casual eatery serving the usual cafe fare.  This reminded us of the original PS Cafe concept when they first started.  While waiting for showtime for the movies, this is a pleasant place to hang out or to meet up with friends. Another reason to patronise the Assembly Ground cafe is their rather early opening hour of 10 am on Saturday and Sunday, when most food outlets are still closed.

The decor of the Assembly Ground cafe is dark and industrial.  The usual decor elements  – exposed brick, naked light bulbs and vintage bicycles are all present.  Assembly Ground is proud of their coffees and have a set of mean looking coffee machines ready for action.  We can confirm that their coffees are very good. The cappuccino and flat white ($6 each with extra shot of espresso) that we ordered that day were indeed rich and flavourful.

We tried the Assembly Brunch ($19.50) which is a platter of the usual big breakfast kind of dish.  Scrambled eggs, sautéed mushrooms, sausage and a thick slice of toast are such common items but the whole thing was well executed here.  A substantial dish for brunch.

We also tried the pulled BBQ chicken sandwich ($16).  This turned out to be a larger portion than we expected.  A big heap of salad and fries accompanied the large portion of roast chicken sandwich made with Turkish bread.  This was too much for one person.  The next time we will share this between two, making it a very reasonable meal at $8 per head.  The taste was good. The lightly toasted Turkish bread had a nice crunchy outer skin with a soft inside. Very nice.

Overall,  Assembly Ground cafe was a typical cafe serving the usual common dishes. But the execution and the friendly service made it a comfortable place to eat these comfort foods with very good coffee.
