Katong is an area known for good food and a wide range of eateries. There are all sorts of tempting and often calorie-rich food. Just take a short walk from Odeon Katong to Joo Chiat Road and there will be several very inviting Ice Cream parlours – like Scoop Therapy, Brownice Italian Vegan Ice Cream and Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique – to test your self control. For those who like to indulge without feeling too guilty, there is  An Acai Affair which offers acai bowls that look like ice cream and taste like ice cream.

An Acai Affair is started by 2 undergraduates who wanted to share their love for acai and all things nutritious and wholesome. Located in a shophouse along East Coast Road, just opposite Katong Square and 112 Katong, it is dedicated to acai bowls and smoothies. Acai berries are from palm trees found in Brazil and the Amazon region and are considered a superfood containing antioxidants, fibres and heart-healthy fats. According to An Acai Affair’s website, their “acai bowl consists of an acai pulp base, which is a really thick smoothie that is eaten with a spoon. It looks like ice cream, tastes better than ice cream, and makes you feel extremely good about yourself”.

An Acai Affair in Katong is small and cosy. The decor is simple but pleasant and there is a relaxed atmosphere. There is a small secret outdoor garden at the back.

The menu is simple and straightforward. There are Smoothies and Signature Acai Bowls of different sizes. You can also customise your acai bowl by picking the base, toppings and drizzle.

I tried a small Acai Fruit Bowl ($5.90). It had slices of banana on top of the acai base and the toppings included chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, goji berries, cacao nibs as well as almond flakes and coconut shavings. It was like having all the trendy superfoods in one cup.

The Acai Fruit Bowl tasted as good as it looked. The acai base was smooth and indulgent. It did taste a lot like ice cream. The various other ingredients added different textures and flavours ,making the acai bowl really enjoyable.

There are claims that acai is good for healthy hair, skin and nails, can boost immunity to illness and even promote graceful ageing. I am not sure if all such claims are clinically proven but the acai bowl I had at An Acai Affair was certainly delicious and delightful. There is scientific evidence suggesting that being happy have major benefits for health. So I have convinced myself that one way or another eating at An Acia Affair will make me healthier –  now I can once again indulge without feeling too guilty.
