Greyhound Cafe – from Bangkok to Hong Kong (and maybe Singapore)

Greyhound Café is a popular fashionable cafe in Bangkok. Somewhat like the story of P.S. Cafes of Singapore, Greyhound started as a clothing label and their casual dining cafe was a successful extension of its fashion label. The cafe now has outlets outside Thailand which offers the same simple Thai food with creative twists. On a brief visit to Hong Kong, we found a Greyhound Café in IFC Mall. We thought it was a good venue for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just desserts and drinks.

IFC Mall in the International Finance Centre is one of the most luxurious malls in Hong Kong Island. Greyhound Café in IFC Mall is like a bohemian side lane in a neighborhood full of swanky ostentatiously decorated fashion boutiques. Greyhound Cafe uses polished marble as well as rough concrete and metal for a trendy street chic interior. The lighting is dim and the atmosphere brings to mind the sidewalk of one of the sois of Bangkok.

The menu of Greyhound Cafe combines Thai and Western dishes, with the added Greyhound twist in some of them. There is the Greyhound Famous Fried Chicken Wings; and other interesting items include Deep fried Crab with Seafood, Wagyu Elvis Burger, Salmon Carpaccio in Spicy Hot Sauce and Spaghetti with Thai Anchovy. Thai Iced Tea and Iced Coffee are available together with a good range of Thai and Western desserts.

We had a Yum Thai Steak Salad (HK$88) as Appetizer. Medium grilled beef mixed with Thai celery, bean sprouts, crushed peanuts were served with authentic Thai condiments and sauces. The portion was quite substantial and included some rice noodles. It could be a one dish meal on its own.

We also tried the fried rice with dried salty fish (HK$88) and beef ball noodles (HK$78). Both simple Thai street food dishes were good. We liked the crunchiness of the salted fish and how the slight spiciness of the fish added flavour to the fried rice.

We ended our dinner at Greyhound Cafe on a sweet note with a piece of chocolate cake with was rich and delicious. It was a simple but enjoyable dinner is a trendy atmospheric cafe.

Greyhound first opened its fashion store in Bangkok in 1980. In 1997, the first Greyhound Cafè opened and there are now many branches in Bangkok as well as in Malaysia and Hong Kong. We are looking forward to the opening of Greyhound Cafè in Singapore.
