Always on the lookout for good Set Lunch deals in Orchard Road, we decided to try out the set lunch offered at the Hilton Hotel Italian restaurant, Il Cielo. It turned out to be a great choice as it was one of the best set lunch deals in Singapore that we know of.
The Il Cielo Italian restaurant is located on the 24th floor – right on the top of the Hilton Hotel on Orchard Road. It shares the penthouse level with the hotel swimming pool. On weekdays, there are two set lunch options – two or three-course Italian set lunch at $25 and $35 respectively. There were three choices in each course. The decor of the restaurant was simple and elegant. The table setting at Il Cielo was quite attractive. Even the bread looked beautiful.
On the hot Singapore afternoon and a view of the inviting pool outside, we could not resist having a bottle of cold white wine to go with the dishes. The wine list at Il Cielo was sufficiently comprehensive to cater to different occasions. For a casual lunch, we selected a wine from Sicily priced at $78. It was a simple, dry and mildly fruity wine that was easy-going.
The starters which were served that day were the cannellini bean soup with rosemary oil and croutons; Taggiasca salad with olive and Mozzarella cheese and Black Angus beef carpaccio with Parmigiano cheese.
All of them were presented beautifully. The soup was smooth and creamy. The salad was fresh and felt very healthy – the pomegranate seeds provided some additional texture. The beef carpaccio was the best starter. The beef was tender and combined well with the taste of the cheese and vegetables.
The mains were Cappellini pasta with Arrabbiata & Pecorino cheese; pan-fried sea bass, pumpkin, cherry tomatoes & potatoes; and roasted baby chicken with bell peppers.
The best main dish was the sea bass. The fish was fresh, the skin nicely crisp and the accompanying pumpkin and potatoes were as enjoyable as the fish itself. The roast chicken was very tender and delicious with the sauce. The pasta by comparison was quite average as it was just pasta with a tomato based sauce with a light cheese flavour.
We only had two desserts – the Blueberry cheesecake and the Pannacotta. The cheesecake was the clear favourite – rich, heavy and with a lot of fruits embedded in it. The pannacotta was also not bad but very light in taste by comparison. Coffee or tea was also included in the set lunch.
Overall, an enjoyable lunch in an attractive restaurant with good food and service at a great price! The 2-course set lunch at the Italian restaurant Il Cielo on top of five-star hotel Hilton Hotel in the heart of Singapore Orchard Road for $25 ++ is one of the best value for money meals we know of in Singapore today.
