First Impressions

Simply Thai is one of those places that is hidden in plain sight behind a simple, brown exterior. If not for the sandwich board, we might not even have realized it was there.

The Lake Chapala Society is just across the corner, so this puts a large number of expats in close proximity, yet on the afternoon we visited, the restaurant was only moderately busy.

The Asian theme begins just behind the cashier stand and continues into the open air dining patio and covered dining upstairs. It is a lovely, peaceful setting designed to create a feeling that you just might be dining in Thailand. Suspend disbelief and enter into the illusion.

The Menu

Even the menu echoes the Thai theme, with faux ivory elephants gracing the front of parchment, handcrafted menus. I was impressed from the very start. I love restaurants where the owners have considered every aspect of their customers' experience and clearly, Simply Thai has done just that.

We ordered two glasses of house vino blanco, a nice Sauvignon Blanc, and took our time to peruse the menu. There was so much to choose from and Asian restaurants lakeside are few and far between, so dining here was already beginning to feel like a wonderful treat.

The menu offered a large selection of appetizers that included deep fried egg rolls, fresh spring rolls, crispy cheese rolls, chicken wings, chicken satay, mango salad and more.

Simply Thai offers a selection of noodle dishes, from Pad Thai and Pad See Euw (a vegetarian dish) to Noodle Soup (Pho), and Drunken Noodles, fried rice with chicken or shrimp, sweet and sour chicken or fish, curries and combination plates for one person or two.

We finally decided on a combination plate for two, served with two crispy egg rolls, two fresh spring rolls, a dish of sweet and sour chicken and one of red curry chicken, all accompanied by a bowl of steamed rice.

Our waiter asked how spicy we would like the curry, and not being familiar with the food at Simply Thai, we asked for the curry to be prepared mildly spiced.

The curry was served with a pleasant sauce, very mild yet with a tangy kick. Next time, we will probably ask for a bit more spice. Our meal was served hot and was well prepared.

We enjoyed a leisurely lunch, dining under the citrus trees in the covered outdoor patio. Simply Thai also advertises breakfast service beginning at 8:30 a.m., with an Asian Omelet priced at $65 pesos.

Ambiance

Simply Thai has created an oriental experience for their customers, from the bamboo curtains and Asian music playing softly in the background, to the ivory elephants on the menus and the elephants marching across the cloth napkins. It really does feel like a stage setting and I love 'restaurant as theater' décor and am always willing to enter into the play.

The restaurant  is clean, pleasant and inviting, with live trees and plants, bamboo accents and décor. Tables and chairs are made of sturdy bamboo. The outdoor dining area is small, but there is additional dining upstairs. Separate washrooms for men and women,  modern and very clean, make this diner very happy.

Service and Price

This is obviously a family owned and operated restaurant, with one person cooking and another taking care of service for the entire restaurant. They pull it all off very well, taking care of all of our needs without making us ever feel like we were being neglected. Service was prompt and courteous.

Prices for appetizers are reasonable, from $35 pesos to $55 pesos. The special combos, served all day, range from $75 pesos to $130 pesos for one person and combination meals for two persons from $210 pesos to $270 pesos.

Wine was $45 pesos for a better than average pour. I appreciate the wine being served in a real wine glass. I was beginning to think that wine glasses were unavailable in Mexico, having been served wine in water goblets in a number of local restaurants.

Our Recommendation ****

Thai food in Mexico? Yes, we have it here, and it is very good, reasonably priced and served in a lovely outdoor setting. This is likely to become a favorite with us, when we are hungry for Red Curry Chicken or crispy egg rolls and fried rice. Simply Thai is just steps from the Lake Chapala Society,  easy to find and worth a visit for delicious dining in an inviting atmosphere.
