First Impressions

La Mision recently opened their doors to guests, who are invited to enjoy an excellent meal in an elegant setting while doing good for the community.

La Mission is a different kind of restaurant in that it really is on a “mission” to serve the community. Their profits go towards helping feed the poor and homebound living in the barrios along Lake Chapala.

The restaurant does this by working to change the lives of single mothers with young children who have no other means of support.

They help fund job training and education programs to enable these mothers to become self-supporting. La Mision proudly displays pictures of the families that they help by the front door so you know where their money is going. But, don't think that because of their charitable focus that La Mision is a soup kitchen. It is quite the opposite. Rather, it is an upscale, gourmet restaurant in a classically refined setting.

La Mision is located on the west side of Ajijic, on Calle Rio Bravo, just north of Tabarka's Restaurant.

You can dine on the patio area or enjoy the beautiful indoor dining rooms. The bathrooms are modern and spotless, and there are separate facilities for hombres and damas. Gracias!

Menu

We have eaten at La Mision twice. Both times the food and service were superlative.

We like to sit outdoors, when  possible, and La Mision has a pleasant outdoor dining area with umbrella-topped tables under a huge shade tree. Speakers mounted outside the restaurant  pipe soft music into the dining areas. The waiter greeted us profusely and remembered us from our previous visit. He took our drink order and brought a freshly baked loaf of bread with oil and spices.
The menu offered a number of tempting dishes. The beef dishes include New York Strip, Vacio, Arrachero, Rib Eye and Beef Ribs.

Except for the ribs, these are sold by the 100 grams and include one or two side dishes, depending on the size of the order. On Tuesdays only, Prime Rib is the featured special from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.

Not in the mood for carne? Choose from Chicken Breast with Mandarin Sauce and Pistachios, Quail's Breast with Demiglasse and Brandy, or Pork Tenderloin with Onion and Miso Sauce. The waiter also informed us of the special of the day, which was a prime rib sandwich with French fries and salad.

We began the meal with clam chowder. This chowder was not a traditional New England chowder, though it did have a clear broth base and cream added for smoothness. It was brimming with clams, as well as carrots, celery, onion and mild spices, though no chunks of potatoes. No matter. The soup was delicious.

I wanted to order the Duck Croquettes, but unfortunately, they were not available on the afternoon we dined. Too bad since they sounded delicious. Instead, we ordered pork tenderloin and a salad with pears and grilled cheese. The pork was Served medium and was tender and juicy.

The medallions surrounded a bed of noodles served in a miso sauce, with carrots and celery. The dish was served hot and freshly prepared.

The salad featured fresh organic greens, thinly sliced pears, sliced, grilled cheese, brightened with a citrus based dressing.

The salad was large enough to be a complete meal. We ordered a crisp, clear California Chardonney to accompany our meal and it was served at precisely the right temperature, something we don't often find in lakeside restaurants.

Though quite full, we couldn't resist dessert. The menu offered two desserts and informs diners to ask the waiter about daily dessert specials.
We had eyed the Mango Mousse with Ginger Cookie on another visit, and were determined to order it this time.
We asked to share a dessert and the waiter accommodated us with two spoons. The mousse was very light and topped with fresh berries.

The mango was not over-powering, but just enough to impart a tropical taste to this delightful final course. Our ginger cookie was missing, but we didn't even realize it until later, when we reviewed our meal. La Mision is a fairly new establishment and the minor kinks and oversights will likely be worked out as they are open longer.

Service and Price

Service is excellent, of course. This is Mexico and we have grown to expect great service from every dining establishment we visit and La Mision did not disappoint.

Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu items.
The price of our meal was moderate, not cheap by any means. Prices range from around $65pesos to $210pesos.

This is an elegant, upscale establishment serving creative dishes that feature  high quality ingredients. And, guests can dine well while doing good for the community.

Our Recommendation ****

We love La Mission. The food is very good and the ambiance welcoming and warm-hearted. You just feel good about eating here.

Whether you prefer beef dishes, pork or chicken, everything at La Mision is prepared well and served with style. We recommend this restaurant to you without reservation. Buen Provecho!
