In the month of August, look up at night and witness some of the incredible shows Mother Nature has to offer with these astronomy events.
August 11-13
This year should be really good to catch the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower. Look towards the constellation Perseus in the northeastern part of the sky.. The shower starts in late July but the peak happens in the early morning hours of the 12th. Sometimes you can see up to 150 meteors per hour.
August 17-18
The second meteor shower of the month is the oft overlooked Kappa-Cygnid Shower. Look towards the constellations Draco, Lyra and Cygnus.
August 22
The August full moon’s peak illumination occurs at 8:02AM ET, but will be visible in the southeast on both the evenings of 8/21 and 8/22. It’s known as the Sturgeon Moon, Green Corn Moon and Grain Moon. Interested in what the other full moons go by? Watch our video and read more here.
Here are a few tips if you wanting to watch the meteor showers from EarthSky.
- Get out of the moonlight. Find some shade by putting a building or large object between you and moon.
- Stay away from city lights.
- Wait at least 20 minutes. It takes that long for your eyes to adjust to the darkness.
- Be patient. Sometimes you will see a few and have to wait for another.
- Best times to watch would be from midnight to dawn.
