11 safety tips for frying a turkey this Thanksgiving

The holidays are a time for family and traditions. For many families that tradition includes firing up the Fryer and treating their Turkey to a bubbly oil bath until golden, brown and delicious. But, if you’re not careful, frying your turkey can go from family tradition to holiday tragedy in the blink of an eye. Stay safe this holiday season with these turkey frying tips.

Safety Tips

  1. Place your fryer on level dirt or grass, away from decks, out of garages and a safe distance from trees and other structures.
  2. Keep kids and pets away from the fryer while frying and until completely cooled.
  3. Avoid moving the fryer once it’s in use.
  4. Leave 2 feet between the tank and the burner when using propane-powered fryers.
  5. Make sure the turkey is completely thawed and dry. Ice or water mixing with hot oil can cause flare-ups.
  6. Never operate a fryer in the rain or snow.
  7. Avoid overfilling the fryer with oil. Oil can easily ignite when it comes in contact with the burner.
  8. Turn off the burner before lowering the turkey into the oil. Once the turkey is submerged, relight the burner.
  9. Wear goggles, use oven mitts and keep an “ABC” or grease-rated fire extinguisher close by. Do NOT use water or a garden hose on a oil or grease fire.
  10. Once finished, carefully remove the pot from the burner, place it on a level surface and cover to let oil cool overnight before disposing.
  11. Opt for an oil-less or infrared fryer for all the juicy deliciousness and less of the risk.
