Toyota is 17th on MIT Technology Review's 50 Smartest Companies of 2016

There was once a time when the internet was tethered by cables and phone lines, when movies were all in 2D, and when car companies and technology companies were two completely different things.

Times have changed, and this year, Toyota found its name alongside those of Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft on MIT Technology Review's 50 Smartest Companies of 2016 list. It ranked 17th, putting it ahead of more traditional electronics companies like IBM and Intel.

MIT points to Toyota's recent $1 billion investment in artificial intelligence, robotics, and mobility -- the Toyota Research Institute -- as well as the automaker's advances in hydrogen fuel cells.

"We're very grateful to be recognized by MIT, one of the finest educational institutions in the world," said Jim Lentz, chief executive officer of Toyota North America. "Toyota's scientists are committed to innovation and leading the way to a future of mobility that is cleaner, safer, and provides freedom of mobility for all."

With a total of 1,636 patents awarded by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 2015, Toyota is also the most prolific innovation company in the auto industry.
