What is an Elevation Survey

On an active Construction site, and even during the planning stages, it can be pretty easy to lose track of some of the details.  After all, most folks will be a lot more worried about the bigger picture considering everything involved.  Because there’s so much at stake, it’s probably not going to be a one-person sort of job.

That’s why bringing in teams of experts to help along the way can be so valuable for these sorts of projects.  You can even find academic studies on this sort of stuff, as you can see here: https://viejournal.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/2213-7459-2-2.  Part of this will likely involve some sort of surveying.

In fact, there’s a pretty good chance that for most construction zones, there will need to be a few instances of surveying.  Today, we’ll be focusing on Elevation surveys.   As you’ll see, they can be pretty important in any building.

What are they?

Well, as the name of them implies, they’re a type of surveying in construction that’s meant to help get a gauge of how high certain elements of a building will be in comparison to the surrounding terrain.  Since that sort of information is difficult to capture in a basic floor plan, this allows architects and engineers to add a bit more detail in for the workers.  Depending on the façade of the building and a few other factors, there could be a need for more support in certain spots versus others.

All of this is to say that this step in the process is a pretty big deal.  That’s just one of the reasons that ASES Ltd specializes in elevation surveying, since there is a general need for those services across many worksites across the world.

Why do they Matter?

As we can probably expect, a lot of people question why getting an elevation survey is such a big deal in the first place.  Well, since they’re part of measured building surveys, that might shine some light on it.  Of course, if you’re not familiar with that either, you might just be more confused.  Don’t worry!

There are a few reasons that they’re integral to the construction process.  For one thing, depending on where your project is, there are different regulations in place in terms of how much light needs to be accessible inside at any given time.  Obviously, the elevation of windows and such can play a big role in how much natural light can get into a structure.

If you’re not exactly sure how that works, this resource might be of use to you.  What else is there to consider, though?  Well, if you’re going to be refurbishing a building any time soon, you might want to take into account that you’ll probably need to get a team out there to do this.  After all, a lot of older structures don’t necessarily adhere to the codes that we have these days.

So, when altering them, it’s important to ensure that they will get up to said code while still retaining their charm.  That’s where surveying really comes into play, especially the elevation ones since there may need to be changes to the positioning of windows or even the shape of them, in some situations.  Honestly, it’s better to prepare for that sort of thing and be safe rather than sorry, especially in construction projects.

Finally, it can also be used if there are last minute changes to any plans that were made.  That all needs to be recorded for later down the road, and part of that is going through this process.  Although it can feel somewhat overwhelming to have to juggle all of this at once, that’s why you can bring in teams of professionals to help with it.

They’re there for a reason, after all – to help make construction projects as smooth as possible.  That way, the site manager can simply take in the information given and analyze it themselves (as well as generating reports afterwards) without having to gather it themselves.  Since that can be one of the hardest parts, having a team there to do it for you, especially if they’re excellent at it, can really lift a weight off of your shoulders.
