Responsive web design? What is it and will it affect you?

Have you checked how your website looks on mobile devices? If it’s Responsive, you may well relax. If not, the time to act is NOW!

Check here to see if your site is compliant.

It’s been coming for a long time, but the zero hour is approaching. Responsive Web Design makes your information easily readable across all devices. More and more people are searching from their mobile devices. If your website isn’t responsive, people may well move on to another site which is responsive and easier to read. The user experience becomes lower in value and the search engines measure this.

What is responsive?

Responsive Web Design is a way to make your website viewable from all kind of devices in an optimal way. This means that you get a good experience no matter if you view the website from a PC, laptop, mobile phone, Ipad, tablet or whatever arises during the future phases of technological advancement.

With design, the website adapts to the different devices and orders the information in a way so that it remains viewable regardless of your gadget type, and without scrolling or magnifying the page.

Statistics

The percentage viewing by mobile device is growing each year. This statistic for the UK shows how mobile internet penetration has increased from 24% in 2010 to 58% in 2014. The prediction is that this will continue to grow for the foreseeable future.

This statistic shows how the mobile internet continues to grow worldwide.

What about search ranking?

Google has announced that from April 21st 2015, they will rank the websites on whether they are responsive and mobile friendly, or not. At the same time Google states that the new ranking will have a significant impact on your mobile search results.

How will the search engines react?

How it will affect those that don’t possess responsive web design?. We can’t say for sure, but as Google states in their blog:

“Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices”.

My guess is, that it could well have a high negative impact on those non-responsive websites.

It may not cause a Y2K-like frenzy, but it may surprise a lot of large companies to see their website, their window to the world, suddenly becoming less influential.
