What are Security Protocols DMARC, SPF, and DKIM

DMARC, SPF, and DKIM are three essential Email security Protocols that complement each other in every aspect. Implementing them in your email security provides you with the best protection to secure your data.

The three email security protocols have gone through a rocky deployment road in the past year. These three protocols are considered the most difficult to configure and require solid knowledge of how they are interrelated and complemented with protective features. But it is worth investing your time to learn how to use DMARC, SPF, and DKIM. Let us have a thorough at these three email protocols and why you need them in your organisation.

SPF

Sender Policy Framework (SPF) acts as the primary resource that hardens your DNS servers and restricts who can send emails from your domain. It helps prevent domain spoofing while enabling your email server to define the messages coming from the domain that it uses.

It comprises three major elements, including:

  • A policy framework
  • An authentication method
  • Dedicated headers in the actual email that convey the above factors

SPF has been updated multiple times and is now available with the latest standard 7208.

DKIM

DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKM) acts as an identifier that ensures the email content remains trusted and has not been tampered with or compromised. It was first proposed in 2007 and updated several times. The latest version of DKIM was updated with IETF standard 8301 last January.

DMARC

This essential protocol combines SPF and DKIM with a consistent set of policies. Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance (DMARC) links the sender’s domain name with what is listed in the from header with reporting back facility from mail recipients.

Reasons to Equip DMARC, SPF, and DKIM

Currently, phishing and email spam are the most preferred techniques used by hackers to enter the network. A malicious spam email can cost you everything, from losing your data to your business reputation. A click on a malicious email attachment can compromise security with ransomware, crypto-jacking scripts, privilege escalation exploits and data leakages.

Having these three protocols in your organisation gives you a competitive advantage over security, as they do not overlap. These three protocols complement each other, and implementing all of them in your organisation will give you the power to protect your data at any cost.

These security protocols have been around the corner for many years, but businesses have recently started interested in them. The reason is the increase in spam phishing and malicious emails that can compromise data security in any organisation. IT enterprises are now more motivated to protect their email infrastructure using these three protocols.

Another reason to implement these protocols is the involvement of the government. Earlier this year, the Department of Homeland Security issued an order to all the IT companies to implement these protocols in their business. If you also want to understand how DMARC, SPF, and DKIM can help you protect your email security and want to implement it in your organisation, our experts can help you.
