WOW Classic: Realms and Races

World of Warcraft Classic is "Azeroth As It Was," released globally on August 26, 2019. The game's release was as it would have been in September 2006, before the launch of expansion packs to the existing retail game. Whether you're a veteran looking for nostalgia, a returning player, or new to WOW entirely, WOW Classic is a must-play MMORPG.

Before you even get into the game, there are many choices to make from the off. Let's have a look at the Realm and Race options you have ahead of you.

Picking a Realm

When picking your Realm style, there are a few things to remember. Firstly, the Realm exists for only those within it. That means if you want to play with your friends, you'll all need to pick the same Realm. Once you have selected one, your character is bound to that Realm. Choose wisely!

There are a few Realm types:

• Normal (PvE)

Normal servers are the most popular. These realms are aimed for the focus to be on adventuring and PvM. These realms do have PvP content but in an optional capacity.

• Player Versus Player (PvP)

Player Versus Player servers are alike normal in terms of content; however, PvP is enabled everywhere by default. No matter where you are in the world, Horde and Alliance members can attack one another. Beware!

• Roleplaying (RP)

Intended for those who like to get further involved with their game, Roleplaying servers are for precisely that, roleplaying. On these worlds, expect to see players assuming the role of and acting as their character.

• Roleplaying PvP (RPPvP)

Servers fit for truly representing the Hoard or Alliance with full spirit. These are fully PvP enabled servers intended for those who love to roleplay and engage in player battles.

Choosing a Faction and Race

There are eight races to choose from in World of Warcraft Classic. Note that each Faction has four races each, confined to their respective Faction. For example, you would not be able to be a Human without being a part of the Alliance.

Let's take a further look at each Race.

• Human (Alliance)

Humans can play as one of 6 classes; Warrior, Paladin, Rogue, Priest, Mage, or Warlock. Humans have an active ability that allows them to be more alert to others using stealth. The passive racial abilities include an increase in health regeneration, higher skill with sword and maces, and increased reputation gains.

• Dwarf (Alliance)

Dwarves can play as one of 5 classes; Warrior, Paladin, Hunter, Rogue, or Priest. Their primary ability is to grant themselves immunity from Disease, Bleed, and Poison effects as well as a temporary armor increase. The passive racial abilities include an increase in the Guns skill, higher resistance to Frost damage, and an ability to sense nearby treasure, marking it on the minimap.

• Night Elf (Alliance)

As a Night Elf, you can play one of 5 classes; Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, and Druid. Note that the Night Elf is the only Alliance race with the ability to play in the Druid class. Their primary power is the ability to be invisible while standing still, 'slipping into the

shadows.' Night Elves have passive abilities, including an increased dodge chance, higher resistance to Nature spells, and a considerable increase to their ghost's speed upon death.

• Gnome (Alliance)

Gnomes only have four classes to choose from; Warrior, Rogue, Mage, or Warlock. Their active ability allows them to remove immobilization effects such as freezes or speed reductions. Gnomes have the passive abilities of increased resistance to Arcane spells, an increase in Engineering skill, and a boost to their Intelligence.

• Orc (Horde)

There are five classes to choose from with an Orc; Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Shaman, or Warlock. Their active skill gives them a large increase in attack power but lowers the effects of healing on themselves at the same time. Passive effects for Orcs are increased skill with axes, greater damage from their pets, and a significantly increased resistance to stun effects.

• Undead (Horde)

Sometimes known as the Forsaken, the Undead have access to 5 classes; Warrior, Rogue, Priest, Mage, or Warlock. Their active ability gives them immunity to Fear, Charm and Sleep effects. The Undead have a second active ability to consume a nearby corpse of a Human or Undead, providing themselves with health regeneration. The Undead also have passive abilities of increased resistance to Shadow attacks as well as the extended duration for underwater breathing.

• Tauren (Horde)

Limited as a Tauren, you may only play one of 4 classes; Warrior, Hunter, Shaman, or Druid. As with Night Elves for the Alliance, Tauren is the only Druid class for the Horde. The Tauren's unique active ability is a stomp that stuns up to 5 enemies in the nearby area. Passively, this Race has a higher resistance to Nature, boosts the Herbalism skill should you choose that profession, and is a tank with their increase to total health.

• Troll (Horde)

Versatile as a troll, you can choose one of 6 classes; Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Shaman, or Mage. Their active ability of Berserking increases attack speed based on how much health you currently have. The lower the health, the faster the attack speed becomes. As passive racial abilities, Trolls make great hunters with higher damage dealt on Beasts as well as increased skill with bows and throwing weapons. Trolls also have passive increased health regeneration.

In conclusion, there's a lot to pick from in just the beginning steps of creating your character, and we haven't even got into Professions and other Skills yet! For the most part. Your Realms choice is crucial, so be sure to communicate with your friends if you're planning on playing together. Your Race, however, is more of a playstyle choice than anything else. The effects your Race has later in the game become less and less prevalent when customizing and building your character. Your journey is only just beginning!
