Different Types of Cloud with their Pros and Cons

Most of us had mostly heard about the Cloud and also its uses for different business purposes. But some of us would not be knowing that even cloud is divided into different cloud types which are used for different purposes. The company should be clear about their requirements before moving to any cloud because the selection of wrong cloud type may end up them in trouble.

Let’s first understand features of each type of cloud in addition to how they work.

Types of Clouds:

Basically, there are 3 types of clouds namely Private Cloud, public cloud, and hybrid cloud.

Different Types of Cloud

  1. Private Cloud:
  • A cloud platform which has a secure environment with a particular amount of storage in addition to hardware to a single organization is known as the private cloud.
  • Private cloud can be hosted within an organization.
  • In private cloud, company stores their confidential data, therefore, no third party can access that data.
Advantages and disadvantages of the private cloud:
Private Cloud
                      Advantages
                            Disadvantages
  • Better Controls over applications and users because it is handled by the single organization and no third party is involved
  • Due to limited hardware available, one can face resource shortage
  • Cost is less than on-premises setup or storage
  • Sometimes resources can be under-utilized
  • This cloud belongs to single organization, Hence high-security
  • Expertise is required
  • Easy Customization
  1. Public Cloud:

  • A cloud platform that is based on standard cloud computing model in which service provider offers resources, applications storage to the customers over the internet is called as public cloud computing.
  • Most of all hardware resources or the storage are shared among many similar users over the internet.
  • Startups or SME’s are keen to save money, therefore, they prefer public cloud.

Advantages and disadvantages of the public cloud:

Public Cloud
                        Advantages
                  Disadvantages
  • One can scale up or down their resources according to usage, hence more scalable
  • Not suitable for confidential data
  • Initial cost is very low
  • Resources are shared between many users, therefore weak on security
  • Independent of location
  • It cannot be customized
  • Public cloud saves time because it is available immediately
  • Performance of this cloud depends on the speed of internet
  • It does not require maintenance
  • Doesn’t require any set of rules or contract with the third party
  1. Hybrid Cloud:
  • Hybrid cloud is a combination of both private and public cloud.
  • Using hybrid cloud, documents which do not require any security can be transferred using public cloud and for to make it more secure data transfer one can customize their cloud, using private cloud
  • Hybrid cloud is gaining more attention due to combined benefits of both models.
Advantages and disadvantages of the hybrid cloud:
Hybrid Cloud
                        Advantages
                        Disadvantages
  • It is  easily scalable
  • Data is more vulnerable to hackers for misuse if customization of cloud is not done properly
  • It is cost-effective
  • Dependency on Infrastructure
  • Since it has both private and public model it is more flexible
Let’s compare this 3 different clouds to get better insight:
Public Cloud
Hosted Private Cloud
Hybrid Cloud
Deployment Vendor Vendor Shared between vendor and customer
Hardware Sharing Shared Dedicated Partially shared partially dedicated
Scalability High High High
Predictable Cost No Yes No
Flexibility Yes Limited Yes
Customization No Depends on Vendor Partial
Security No Yes Yes
Instant Provisioning Yes Yes Yes
(can we provide vendor/customer meaning here, also recheck these details with our developer once)
Adoption of different clouds in the market:

Enterprise Cloud Strategy

  • According to RightScale 2017 State of the Cloud Report, there are 85% of the total organization who are using multi-clouds
  • 9% of this is using only public cloud whereas 5% of the total are using only private cloud
How DevOpsTech helps to select correct cloud according to client’s necessity:
