4 Possible Solutions If Excel Superscript Is Not Working

We have taken a concise dataset to explain the steps clearly. The dataset has approximately 6 rows and 2 columns. Initially, we formatted all the cells under the Sales (units) column in Text format. For all the datasets, we have 2 unique columns which are Product and Sales (units). Although we may vary the number of columns later on if that is needed.

1. Using Format Cells to Fix Excel Superscript Not Working

In this first method, we will use the Format Cells option in Excel to mitigate the problem of superscript not working. Follow the steps below to do this.

Steps:

  • First, type the entire data value and select the portion you want to convert to superscript.

  • Then, right-click and select Format Cells.

  • Now, in the Format Cells window, check the Superscript option as in the image below and click OK.

  • Finally, press Enter and this should convert the data to a superscript without any problems.

In this way, you should be able to solve the specific superscript problem.

2. Utilizing Quick Access Toolbar to Solve Excel Superscript Not Working

The Quick Access Toolbar in Excel gives the ability to use the most common commands within a short time. We can customize this toolbar to choose the commands that we most need for our own uses. Then we can access these commands from any part of the application. We can use this QAT to set superscript if the regular methods are not working. Let us see how to do this.

Steps:

  • To start with this method, click on the Customize Quick Access Toolbar icon at the top of the screen.

  • Now, click on More Commands.

  • Next, in the Excel Options window, select Superscript and click on Add.
  • Now click OK.

  • Then, select the data value to convert to superscript and click on the Superscript icon as in the image below.

  • As a result, the number 2 should now be a superscript.

Finally, you should now be able to properly add superscript using this simple fix.

3. Inserting Superscript from Equation

In Excel, there is the option to directly use superscript equations if other techniques are not working. Below are the detailed steps for this.

Steps:

  • To begin with, go to the Insert tab and click on Equation under Symbols.

  • Here, click on Script and click on Superscript.

  • Next, fill in the values in the formula as in the image below.

  • Finally, repeat the previous steps for all the other cells to set the numbers as superscripts.

As you can see, this method is also very effective to add superscripts quickly.

4. Applying Ink Equation to Fix  Excel Superscript Not Working

In this last method, will try to fix the superscript not working issue using the Ink Equation feature in Excel. See the steps below.

Steps:

  • For this, navigate to the Insert tab and click on Equation under Symbols.
  • Then, click on Ink Equation.

  • After that, in the Math Input Control window, draw the base number and the superscript using the mouse and click Insert.

  • Consequently, this should solve the problem and you can use this to quickly add superscripts in Excel.

So this is the last method that you can try and see if it solves the problem at hand.

Conclusion

I hope that you were able to apply the fixes that I showed in this tutorial on 4 possible solutions to the excel superscript not working problem. As you can see, there are quite a few ways to achieve this. So wisely choose the solution that suits your situation best. If you get stuck in any of the steps, I recommend going through them a few times to clear up any confusion. Lastly, to learn more excel techniques, follow our ExcelDemy website.
