How to Add Hyperlink to Another Sheet in Excel

Here we’ve got a worksheet called “Sheet1” with the names of some students and their marks in the examination of a school called Sunflower Kindergarten.

Our objective today is to add hyperlinks to this sheet in another worksheet, of the same workbook and a different workbook.

1. Adding a Hyperlink Using the HYPERLINK Function

We can add hyperlinks through the HYPERLINK function of Excel. This is the simplest way in fact.

First, we shall add hyperlinks to a worksheet of the same workbook, then of a different workbook.

Case 1: To a Worksheet in the Same Workbook

We have opened a worksheet called “Sheet2” in the same workbook. And created an empty table there to insert the hyperlinks of the marks.

To add a hyperlink in the sheet, select a cell and enter the HYPERLINK function.

The syntax of the HYPERLINK function is:

• To create a link to cell C4 of Sheet1, the link_location will be “#Sheet1!C4”.

Note: The Hash Symbol (#) is important. It denotes that the worksheet is of the same workbook.

• And friendly_name is any convenient name that you want to show as the link. For this example, I name it “Marks”.

So the HYPERLINK formula for this example will be:

Case 2: To a Worksheet in Different Workbook

To create a hyperlink to a worksheet of a different workbook, enter the name of the workbook before the worksheet name enclosed by a square barces[] inside the HYPERLINK function.

[Note: The two workbooks must be within the same folder. Otherwise, you have to enter the full location of the workbook].

Here we’ve created a new workbook called “Book2”. And the previous workbook was “Book1”.

To create a hyperlink to cell C4 of Sheet1 of Book1 in the Sheet1 of Book2, the HYPERLINK formula will be:

2. Adding a Hyperlink from the Context Menu

If you don’t want to use the formula, you can add hyperlinks using the context menu of Excel.

Case 1: To a Worksheet in the Same Workbook

• Right-click on the cell where you want to enter the hyperlink. From the options available, select Hyperlink.

• Click on Hyperlink. You will get a dialogue box called Insert Hyperlink.

To add a hyperlink to a worksheet of the same workbook, Select Place in this Document from the left panel.

In the Text to Display box, enter the name of the link to show. For this example, I enter it as Marks.

Then in the Type the Cell Reference box, enter the cell reference of the cell that you want to link. For this example, it is C4.

And in the Select a Place in the Document box, select the worksheet name to which you want to link. For this example, it is Sheet1.

• Click OK. And you will see a hyperlink has been created on your selected cell.

Case 2: To a Worksheet in a Different Workbook

You can also use this method to create a hyperlink to a worksheet in a different workbook.

Here we have opened a new workbook called “Book 2”. Now we want to add a hyperlink from the Sheet1 of Book 2 to the Sheet1 of Book 1.

• Follow the same procedure as discussed above to open the Insert Hyperlink dialogue box.
• In the Insert Hyperlink dialogue box, from the left panel, click on Existing File or Web Page.

Then browse to the workbook to which you want to link. For this example, I want to link to Book1.

• Then click OK. You will find a hyperlink created on your selected cell connecting you to the desired workbook.

Note: You can’t link to a specific cell of a different workbook in this way. You can just link to the workbook.
