CAF Confederation Cup: Hawks of Gambia shock Akwa United in Uyo

Akwa United FC began their Caf Confederation Cup campaign in Uyo on a losing note on Sunday, by falling 1-2 in the first round, first leg match against Hawks of Gambia.

It was Abdu Maikaba’s men’s first defeat at home in all competitions this season.

The Promise Keepers dominated possession from start to finish in the game but were made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal.

Banjul Hawks got the opener through Mohammed Jallow in the the 11th minute, while Lamine Chatty added the second in the 34th minute.

Victor Mbaoma reduced the deficit for the hosts in the 72nd minute.

The teams played on a wet turf following a heavy rain before kick-off at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

Gambian club Hawks had warn Akwa United they will be out for victory in their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Sunday.

The Secretary of the Banjul side Kamaso Sadibou said, while inspecting the venue for the encounter on Wednesday, they had video clips from Akwa United ’s previous matches and that the coaches had watched them closely to help them win the game.

Sadibou said, “I have the videos of Akwa United’s last five matches, even the last match against Wikki Tourists.
