WELCOME ADDRESS PRESENTED BY DR. AMADU ATTAI, STATE CHAIRMAN, ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS (APC) AKWA IBOM CHAPTER AT THE FLAG-OFF CEREMONY OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION CAMPAIGN HOLDING AT THE UYO TOWNSHIP STADIUM ON SATURDAY, 18TH NOVEMBER 2017

PROTOCOL

If I was asked to caption this welcome message, my title will be “Change Has Come to Akwa Ibom”. I cannot contain my joy as I look back in retrospect at the days when as state Chairman, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the most vocal opposition Party in the state at the time. In contrast with what we are witnessing in this arena, I dare say that what has manifested here today, is a promise foretold.

For many years, discerning populace in Akwa Ibom endured misrule, impunity, financial squadermania and government by iron fist of the ruling Party in the state. We prayed and worked very hard for change. Today, I stand before you, boldly and courageously but with utmost humility and pride to declare and proclaim, “That Change has come to Akwa Ibom state”.

The change that has come to Akwa Ibom state has been carefully crafted and orchestrated by the All Progressives Congress (APC), an all embracing and forward looking political Party under the Leadership of “Mr. Integrity”, President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR). Akwa Ibom people have made a wise and unrepentant choice to support President Muhammadu Buhari and his Administration. Our choice of APC and support for President Buhari is predicated on the sincerity of purpose and honest intention of Mr. President to return Nigeria back to her winning ways and former days of glory.

The good intentions of APC can be gleaned from the various programme earmarked by the Party and steadily being implemented for the benefit and welfare of Nigerians.

We applaud the emphasis and priority given to the various social investment schemes of the Federal government aimed at alleviating the sufferings of Nigerians, particularly the youths such as; (1) Conditional Cash Transfer (2) Home Grown School Feeding (3) N-Power and (4) General Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP).

We commend Mr. President for vigorously implementing the 3point agenda of the party; (1) Security (2) Anti-corruption war and (3) Revamping the economy. Recent reports by the National Bureau of statistics (NBS) shows that in keeping with its campaign promises APC has rejigged the economy and taken the country out of recession as recorded following marginal improvements in the economy with renewed International and Investors’ confidence.

I want to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to everyone that has contributed in no little measure to nurse and grow APC up-to this enviable height in Akwa Ibom state. APC has changed the political landscape in the state and given the ruling party real cause for concern. Judging from what we have seen in this arena and the structures of the Party on ground, I make boast to say that APC is a Party to beat in the forth-coming Local Government Election and the 2019 general elections.

Having said the foregoing, I want to very sincerely and with much delight (alongside members of the state working committee) welcome the Distinguished guests who have come from far and near to grace this occasion of official flag-off of Akwa Ibom state APC Local Government Election Campaign.

Let me in the first instance express my sincere gratitude to Mr. President, Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) and his Vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) for providing quality and exemplary leadership for the Party. I want to specifically thank the National Chairman of our Great Party, HE, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, the National Secretary, Hon. Mai Mala Buni and members of the National Working Committee for honouring our invitation to grace this occasion. Furthermore, I wish to specifically thank the Governor of Imo state and Chairman, Progressives Governors Forum, HE, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and his colleagues for finding time to visit Uyo in honour of our request.

Space will not permit me to list all the dignitaries who are here with us today. However, I want to recognize and welcome all the Federal appointees from Akwa Ibom state who have come to share in this ceremony and lend their support to the State Chapter towards the prosecution of the December 2nd, 2017 Local Government Election campaign. We are indeed proud of your respective services to the Party and collective contribution to our National development.

I will not conclude this address without mentioning our concerns as a Party over the manifest and seemingly obvious plans of the ruling party in the state through the machination of the State Independent Electoral Commission to manipulate the Electoral process to favour and/or give our major opposition party undue advantage to rig the local government election. APC has challenged in the law court actions and inactions of the state Electoral Commission that are in breach of Extant Laws for the conduct of a free, fair and credible Local Government election in the state. We have alerted the electorate, International Election Monitoring Groups, Civil Liberty Organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s) and the respective security agencies of the conspiracy and grand design by AKISIEC in collusion with the State Government to perfect the plot to rig the election in favour of the PDP thereby fraudulently derail the course of a peaceful Local Government Election in the state.

Once again, I welcome you to Akwa Ibom (The Land of promise) and thank you for being part of this remarkable experience. God Bless you all as I wish you a safe journey back to your respective destinations.
