(4/28/06 - AUSTIN, TX) - Officials at an Austin hospital have agreed to extend a deadline to stop treatment for a Severely Ill Patient whose family wants to keep her alive.
Vo's daughter, LoAnn Trinh, said the family's goal is to get Vo stabilized so she can be taken home.
"She is not brain dead," Trinh said. "To pull someone off life support would be cruel and unusual."
The hospital was acting under a 1999 state law that allows it to discontinue life-sustaining treatment for terminal patients as long as its ethics committee determines the case is futile and gives the patient's family 10 days notice to find another facility.
