Chelsea star Axel Disasi scores bonkers 40-yard own goal in Leicester FA Cup tie

[ NEW BOARD GAME ]

Axel Disasi scored one of the goals of the season for Chelsea during their FA Cup quarter-final against Leicester City, the only problem for the defender being it was in his own net. The Frenchman’s wayward backpass caught goalkeeper Robert Sanchez out, with the ball able to sail into an empty net.

It had been going so well for the Blues. Having raced to a two-goal lead during the first period, Mauricio Pochettino’s side came out of the interval with one foot already in the semi-final. However, the game hinged on a bonkers moment from Chelsea defender Disasi, who was attempting to play the ball back to Sanchez.

Instead, the ball raced over the Spanish goalkeeper’s head, before dropping just in front of the goal line and trundling into the net. A horror moment for Disasi, which sparked a comeback from Leicester, who moments later equalised via Stephy Mavididi.

It proved to be an afternoon of shockers for the home side, who earlier in the first half missed a penalty. Raheem Sterling pulled rank over Cole Palmer to take the spot-kick when the score was 1-0 in Chelsea’s favour, only for the former Manchester City and Liverpool man to see his tame effort saved by Jakub Stolarczyk.

Sterling’s woes continued during the first half, when he was played through on goal, but once again he couldn’t get the better of Stolarczyk, with the 29-year-old missing the target. But those frustrations turned toxic from the Chelsea fans, who after seeing their side surrender a two-goal lead, began to boo Sterling himself.

It was after Sterling once again pushed Palmer aside, this time to take a free-kick, which ended up being fired high and wide over the Foxes’ goal. Those protestations from the Blues faithful intensified when Mykhailo Mudryk was hauled off the pitch midway through the second period, with Sterling remaining on the pitch.

In the end though, Chelsea’s issues were remedied somewhat by yet another late FA Cup winning goal. Carney Chukwuemeka came off the bench to snatch the winning goal, with Palmer once again showing his class with a delicate flick into the substitute’s path.

Chelsea were able to take advantage of a ravaged Leicester defence, who earlier in the contest had been reduced to 10 men. Man City loanee Callum Doyle was originally adjudged to have fouled Nicolas Jackson inside the penalty area, only for a VAR check to reveal the incident was outside the box, meaning the Leicester man was sent off instead.

The tie was confirmed deep into added time when Noni Madueke danced past three Leicester players, before curling into the top corner. A late blitz for the Blues means both Disasi and Sterling’s blushes were spared during a barmy afternoon in west London.
