Leandro Trossard played the role of super-sub to help rescue a point for Arsenal against Chelsea on Saturday evening and he's revealed the attention to detail that led to his equaliser.

Considered doubtful for the London derby at Stamford Bridge as a result of sustaining a hamstring injury against Manchester City prior to the international break and subsequently withdrawing from the Belgium squad, the 28-year-old was passed fit to retain his place in the matchday squad, although he did drop out of the starting line-up.

Perhaps with a point to prove after being overlooked in favour of Gabriel Martinelli, Trossard's impact was almost immediate. Just six minutes after coming onto the field, he peeled away at the back post to prod home Bukayo Saka's inch-perfect cross to complete an unlikely turnaround for Arsenal.

And there was no luck about the goal either with the forward revealing a conversation he had with the Gunners' number seven in training ahead of the game, presumably spotting a weakness in Malo Gusto's game as the Frenchman was caught sleeping for the equaliser.

"I knew when B [Saka] put it on his left foot that I had to make the run," Trossard told reporters at Stamford Bridge after the four-goal thriller. "We spoke about it in training and it was the perfect ball and I knew I had to make contact and it was a great goal."

By no means were the north London outfit at their best against Chelsea. This a statement that Trossard largely agrees with, but while he accepts there is room for improvement, he has praised his teammates' character for coming back from a two-goal deficit to leave SW6 with a point.

"Yeah, at the end if you are 2-0 down then you are happy to take a point away," he added. "But we also know that we can do better and need to take that with us to the next game. Well done to the boys - they never let their heads go down and kept believing. You can see you only need one moment to change a game. Declan scored a great goal and that got us into the game and believing again and, as you can see, we were still able to take points away."

"For football, it is always more thinking about things more as a loss," Trossard said when asked if Arsenal dropped two points or gained one. "But if you think about it, it is also a gained point if you are 2-0 down at a tough place against a team who is playing well. You have to bear that in mind as well. At the end, it is a good point - we just need to do better next time."

For Trossard, both of his Premier League goals this season have come as a substitute. In fact, all three of his strikes in the competition for the Gunners have come via this particular route as he opened his account for his new club in the 1-1 draw against Brentford back in February four minutes after being introduced.

With Arsenal able to call upon the Belgian and Eddie Nketiah in a game where Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus weren't quite at their best simply highlights the depth Mikel Arteta has in attack - even if the squad perhaps is still missing a proven goalscorer in the mold of an Erling Haaland, for example.

But with players ready to make an impact either as a starter or from the bench, Trossard has stressed the importance of a deep squad: "Yeah, maybe," he said. "We had it last season as well. You need everybody fit as well and at the moment we have good availability and you can see how everyone can help to get points."
