Club president slams Todd Boehly amid huge claim on Chelsea multi-club ownership plans

[ WATCH TV LIVE ]

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has been blasted by Portuguese Club Belenenses' club president amid reports that his consortium are looking to buy Sporting CP in the near future.

The American, who took over from Roman Abramovich at Chelsea last year, oversaw the club's worst Premier League season in history in his first year as owner. It came after a whole heap of managers including Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard were unable to deal with a bloated squad and failed to get results on the pitch.

However, there have been improvements under current boss Mauricio Pochettino who, before the current international break, has managed three straight wins - a feat the Blues only managed to string together once last season. However, the Blues are not the only club that Boehly has to keep an eye on now.

His consortium also bought Ligue 1 club RC Strasbourg over the summer, with Boehly and company pumping money into the club to give them a bit of a facelift in the transfer window just gone. However, supporters were not happy with how they believe Boehly perceives their club, with them claiming he only sees them as a feeder team to his true 'favourite child' in Chelsea.

In a statement released by the club's official fan group, they wrote: "Money without competence doesn’t lead to anything good, and the example of Chelsea, our so-called ‘big brother’, who have spent a lot of money but have had a vertical fall down the English hierarchy, is an important reference point: We don’t want to incompetence that reigns at Chelsea at RCSA. Neither directly, nor indirectly.

"Beyond the Strasbourg case, we wish to also remind you that multi-club ownership is a danger to football. The pyramid system that this system is slowly locking into place, and even more strongly than was already the case, risks reducing the majority of clubs to a simple objective of developing young players and helping the few clubs at the top of the pyramid in order to yield a profit for their business. Clearly, it is a very worrying perspective."

But now, Boehly is being lambasted for his multi-club approach to football, an approach that he is by far the first to try and execute, from a much different direction. Many ownership groups own multiple clubs, including Manchester City and their 13 other partner clubs all under the City Group consortium and Red Bull with their five clubs.

However, Belenenses president Patrick Morais de Carvalho has also targeted Boehly after reports appear to suggest the Chelsea owner could swoop in and buy one of their Portuguese rivals. He said (via SPTC): "We have to define the financing model we want for Belenenses for the coming years.

"There are some models that are in fashion that do not interest us. One of those is the multi-ownership of clubs, as happens with Red Bull and the City Group.

"The second known financing model disgusts me and Belenenses even more and has to do with a trend of clubs buying other clubs. For example, in Portugal there has been news that Chelsea want to buy Sporting.

"I think it is a plan and an intention that offends Portugal. In this case it also offends Sporting fans and fans of Portuguese football in general. This is not the future.

"For us it is unthinkable that Belenenses would ever be acquired by another club. Belenenses is not willing to be the 'B team' of any European or world club."
