A new season means more new players to discuss as different profiles rise to the surface and suddenly begin to gain attention. Sometimes late bloomers find moves which realise their potential whilst every year new young players emerge and get opportunities at the elite level.

The Bundesliga has so often been a producer of young talent and Arsenal have not necessarily looked to take advantage of this. In fact, the last player Arsenal signed from Germany for the senior side was Bernd Leno in 2018 who has since left the club on a permanent deal to Fulham.

Prior to that, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was signed in his prime from Borussia Dortmund, Sead Kolasinac arrived on a free transfer from Schalke, Granit Xhaka was bought from Borussia Monchengladbach and going back further Lukas Podolski was signed from FC Koln.

Per Mertesacker, Tomas Rosicky, Aleksandr Hleb and Jens Lehmann are some of the less modern examples too. Never have Arsenal signed one of the blooming young prodigies of German football.

This season however there are two names that plenty of Arsenal fans are talking about. The first is the current league’s top scorer who has a staggering 13 league goals in the opening seven games – quite the tally.

The player in question is Serhou Guirassy whose expected goals so far this season is just 7.2 meaning he has nearly doubled what he’s been expected to score from the chances he has had. Naturally, this has got people talking but the Guinean international has a drawback.

In March he will turn 28. Now as a 28-year-old myself I am reluctant to bash what is a brilliant age if I say so myself but in footballing terms, it is widely recognised as the prime of a player’s career especially in the striker role.

It isn’t to say that Guirassy wouldn’t continue his fine goalscoring form were he to move to Arsenal. However, similar to concerns I have about links with Ivan Toney, I simply feel Arsenal would be better off investing in someone younger who has the potential to grow into a player scoring plenty of goals leading up to, throughout and after their prime.

When your main title rival has 23-year-old Erling Haaland, it should be easy to see why this should be the target. The problem is that finding that player is incredibly difficult and almost always a financial risk.

There are however two options. The first is a player I have discussed in detail already and that is Benjamin Sesko.

The 20-year-old RB Leipzig striker has five goals in ten games this season despite having only 351 minutes of action under his belt. Like Evan Ferguson of Brighton, he is not yet a guaranteed starter but his talent is undeniable having moved from Red Bull Salzburg and already getting plenty of goals.

The third name is Victor Boniface. The Nigerian striker has quite the idol ahead of him in the national side in Victor Osimhen and after moving to the Bundesliga from Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer he has seven goals in the same number of league games – nine in ten across all competitions.

At 6’2, Boniface offers the height, speed and power that Arsenal have perhaps lacked from their current offering of forwards. At 22, he is also in the perfect age bracket to start games and develop further into a top centre-forward.

The prices of all the aforementioned players in today’s market are likely to be extortionate, especially considering having only just moved they are under long-term contracts but to get the best Arsenal have learned you have to pay the big money.
