Mikel Arteta labelled Pep Guardiola clone as former Arsenal defender urges Bukayo Saka rest

[ WATCH TV LIVE ]

Two former Arsenal left-backs feature in today’s Arsenal news round-up ahead of the clash against Manchester City. The Gunners are aiming to end a run of 12 Premier League games without a win against Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering side.

Any Gooner will snap your hand off for three points - no matter how they come - but, should Arsenal win by a two-goal margin, they will leapfrog bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur and go top of the league. Here is your daily Gunner news digest for Sunday, October 8.

Arteta offers Edu verdict

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has spoken about his working relationship with Gunners' sporting director Edu, joking that he speaks to the Brazilian transfer chief more than his own wife. Speaking to Sky Sports about Edu, Arteta said: "We work really well together.

"We've been through a lot, but we always share the same feelings towards the club. Really positive person.

"A vital person at the club. I speak with him in summer and winter much more than with my wife."

Arteta called Pep clone

Gael Clichy has blasted Mikel Arteta as a Pep Guardiola rip-off for banishing Aaron Ramsdale to the bench. The former Arsenal left-back believes the ongoing goalkeeping saga draws parallels to when Guardiola, Arteta’s former mentor, dumped Joe Hart in favour of Claudio Bravo.

“Mikel Arteta has shown again why he's a copy of Pep Guardiola,” the Frenchman told Genting Casino. “One of the main qualities of Pep (is) he is ruthless, he doesn't care who you are. Arteta bringing in David Raya is the same situation, he doesn't want Aaron Ramsdale to relax. Ramsdale was the only goalkeeper competing for the number one spot, now he has tough competition.

“With Joe Hart, the first quality Pep Guardiola wanted was his goalkeeper to be great with his feet, which he felt Joe wasn't and Claudio Bravo was. But personally, I think Hart was a much better player than Bravo was.”

Gibbs urges Saka rest

Kieran Gibbs believes Arteta should leave Bukayo Saka out of the Arsenal side when Manchester City travel to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. The Gunners winger was forced off in midweek during the shock 2-1 defeat to RC Lens.

Before the Champions League clash, there were already calls to rest Saka as he also appeared in pain during the 4-0 win over Bournemouth. Arteta ultimately ignored those calls - a move that backfired as Saka pulled up just days later.

Ex-Arsenal defender Gibbs, who played alongside Arteta for five years, urged his former teammate to avoid risking Saka. Speaking to ESPN , the 33-year-old insisted his absence would be bigger than Rodri’s suspension.

“For me, he is the franchise player,” Gibbs said. “I think he is a bigger miss than Rodri being out for City. I would have to leave him out. If it is a muscle injury, then you have got to leave it.”
