Postecoglou breaks 63-year Tottenham record in Luton win as Yves Bissouma suspension explained

[ WATCH TV LIVE ]

Tottenham could enter the October international break at the top of the Premier League table after a hard-fought win against Luton. Spurs currently sit above both Manchester City and Arsenal but a win for either side in their clash today will see them leapfrog Ange Postecoglou's side at the summit, however a stalemate will result in Spurs being top for the next two weeks.

Given the respective starts to the season for Luton and Tottenham, the latter went into the clash at Kenilworth Road as heavy favourites. Four clear-cut chances in the opening 10 minutes highlighted that fact but Spurs were unable to make it count with their task made that much harder after Yves Bissouma was sent off for two yellow cards.

Despite the hosts having the man advantage, Spurs went in front through Micky van de Ven after he turned home James Maddison's cutback. Postecoglou's men defended valiantly for the remaining minutes with victory taking them up to 20 points won out of a possible 24.

Here's your latest Tottenham headlines from football.london on Sunday, October 8.

Postecoglou helps Tottenham break 63-year record

Tottenham have made a truly exceptional start to the 2023/24 Premier League season with Postecoglou yet to lose in 90 minutes. A defeat in the Carabao Cup to Fulham is the only blemish on his managerial record in north London with his new-look team displaying a number of strong characteristics.

Spurs have won five points courtesy of goals in added time and their unbeaten start to the league season has only been matched by Arsenal. That 20-point tally also places Postecoglou and the current Tottenham team in club history with the 1960/61 league campaign as the last time a start this good was made, and the Lilywhites went on to win the double in that season.

Bissouma suspension explainer

Tottenham were dealt a massive blow before half-time against Luton Town as influential midfielder Yves Bissouma was sent off. The 27-year-old picked up his second yellow card of the game before the break after being caught diving on the edge of the Hatters' box.

Heading into the game, another yellow card would have resulted in a one-match suspension for the Mali international as the five-game limit would have been hit. However, there was some confusion over the games he will miss considering he was already suspended for the Fulham game when he was shown the red card.

Brilliant Son prediction revealed

Micky van de Ven has revealed the brilliant prediction made by Tottenham captain Son Heung-min before he scored his first goal for Tottenham. Bissouma's sending off took Spurs down to nine outfield players and as a result, the Hatters had several chances to equalise but they could not find a way past Guglielmo Vicario.

A goal and clean sheet understandably resulted in the Dutch international being named man of the match and in his interview on TNT Sports once the final whistle had gone, he revealed a very interesting chat he had with Spurs captain Son Heung-min before the game.
