Jurgen Klopp Liverpool replay call makes Arsenal Premier League title-ending VAR error worse

[ WATCH TV LIVE ]

Jurgen Klopp has called for Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Tottenham to be replayed after the infamous VAR error not to allow Luis Diaz’s onside goal from the clash. Audio from the incident was released by the officiating organisation yesterday which revealed the conversations between the individuals responsible for the catastrophic mistake.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Europa League game with Union Saint-Gilloise, the German admitted he felt that the best resolution would be to have the game replayed. He said, "Some people probably don't want me to say, but not as the manager of Liverpool so much, more as a football person, the only outcome should be a replay.

“That's how it is. It probably will not happen.”

Probably? No, I would be frankly beyond shocked, perhaps more so than any incident I can remember of the officiating sort if a decision was made for the match to need to be replayed.

That said, the most shocking example prior to this would have indeed been last weekend when the mistake was made – so the impact is perhaps less than desirable from a descriptive point of view at least. The time before that, rather staggeringly, was another short period ago as I watched Ivan Toney score at the Emirates Stadium to level the match at 1-1 after Leandro Trossard thought he’d given the Gunners the perfect boost ahead of a trip to Manchester City.

Toney was delivered the ball by Christian Norgaard who is standing in an offside position when he receives the ball to redirect it to the striker. VAR official Lee Mason was revealed to have forgotten to draw the lines to show the Norwegian was indeed offside.

The game ended with the scores level and PGMOL was compelled to call Mikel Arteta to offer a thorough apology. The Spaniard spoke in a subsequent press conference where he revealed that the only way he would be satisfied was to be given the points he felt he and his side was owed.

“I will only be satisfied if they give me the two points back,” he said. But admitted, “Which is not going to be the case!”

Therefore the idea that Liverpool would be granted a replay when Arsenal had to simply get on with their season, which was severely damaged by the loss of momentum the Brentford draw caused, would be ludicrous. It might be unfair, but something that was unfair only a few months ago does not suddenly change because it is Liverpool being wronged and not Arsenal.

Did Jurgen Klopp call for Arsenal to have their game against Brentford replayed because it was the right thing to do? Of course not.

It’s a mistake and the PGMOL should take full responsibility but we cannot simply replay games, it would be impossible to recreate the scenario even with the game starting from the same minute. Player fitness, crowd environment, fatigue from surrounding fixtures, injury status, and added fixture congestion make it impossible.

What needs replaying is the protocol for future matches and hopefully, changes will be made. The game in the Premier League has been brought to its lowest standard of officiating in my view in its history and this needs to improve drastically and quickly.
