'Top team' - Verdict on Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea from Premier League rivals

[ UK TV LIVE ]

It's a new era at Chelsea with a new head coach, new players and new expectations, however it's been the same old problems hitting Mauricio Pochettino early into his tenure at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have played four Premier League games so far this campaign, facing off against rivals Liverpool in a tough opening day clash. A thrilling 1-1 draw played out that could've seen either team walk away with all three points, but a share of the spoils was all that was awarded.

Defeat to West Ham hit soon after as a clinical performance typical of a David Moyes side ensured that the hosts ran out 3-1 winners. Chelsea did manage to get their first three points on the board in response though, putting three goals past newcomers Luton Town the week after.

Finishing came into question again for Chelsea in their final game before the international break as Nottingham Forest won 1-0 in true smash and grab style. It means that Pochettino has earned four points from his opening four games and while performances have largely been promising, the clinical edge isn't there yet.

With a long road ahead before the end of the season, some of the managers that have faced Chelsea have already had their say on the side so far and expectations ahead.

Jurgen Klopp - Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp believed that Chelsea had the better of the game on the opening day when discussing the match in his press conference. "But obviously Chelsea was better in the game," the German coach said after the score draw at Stamford Bridge.

"It was an open game then and second half with the crowd and all these things, we had to dig really deep and fight hard. In the end we got a point and that's OK. I saw a lot of things I liked and, of course, some things I didn't like particularly, but it's a first game in a tough place. I tend to see it rather positive, to be honest. So far in my career the first matchdays were always difficult and an away game at Chelsea as a first matchday is not a top draw. So we have a point and we keep working."

The manager couldn't resist a little dig at Chelsea's transfer business though, following a saga involving Moises Caicedo, adding: "That's what each Chelsea manager wants and usually they get it."

David Moyes - West Ham

Moyes was full of praise for Chelsea, despite his West Ham side coming away with all three points with a 3-1 victory over the Blues this season. He told the press: "We were playing against a really good Chelsea team. They were really good today and really good against Liverpool.

"So for us to come away with a positive result today was enormous, it really was. It went our way today but we won’t always come up against a team who are as good in and around the box and are as quick and slick. They’ve got incredibly quick forward players that are going to cause teams problems. Lots of things today went in our favour. We have to be realistic – I thought they were the better team by a long way for long parts of the game.”

Rob Edwards - Luton Town

Following defeat at Stamford Bridge, Luton Town boss Rob Edwards described Chelsea as a "top, top team" in his post-match interview, while also singling out Enzo Fernandez for praise. He told the official Luton social media: "These teams ask certain questions of you and those outside centre-backs have got to be really brave the way we go. Burkey [Reece Burke] was going all the way in with Enzo Fernandez, who’s a special player.”

Steve Cooper - Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest ran out 1-0 winners in a game that had all the chances for a Chelsea win, but none of them could be put away. Steve Cooper was full of praise for his side and hinted that his team were setup to frustrate the Blues without the ball and hit them on the counter.

He told the press: "We knew it was going to be the type of game that it was – you don’t come here to plan to dominate possession and have chance after chance, but if you do certain things well you can create chances and keep a clean sheet. That is how it unfolded.”
