As expected, Chelsea were one of the busiest Premier League clubs in the transfer market over the summer.

Todd Boehly and co. forked out a staggering £400million - taking their dealings since buying the club past the £1billion mark after just one year. Ground needed to be gained on teams above them after an underwhelming campaign last time around.

Despite the outlay, the Blues have struggled to hit the ground running in 2023/24. New boss Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping his team can gel after the international break before launching an assault on the Champions League places.

A trip to Bournemouth - a team Chelsea surprisingly did the double over last season - provides a perfect opportunity to kick-start their campaign. Ahead of the fixture, football.london has ranked each of the Blues’ 12 summer signings.

12. Djordje Petrovic

Goalkeeper was an area that needed to be improved, with Kepa Arrizabalaga failing to make an impression despite countless opportunities. Edouard Mendy left for the Saudi Pro League and, as you will see later on this list, Chelsea signed a first-team replacement.

Petrovic, who arrived from New England Revolution for around £10million, is regarded as one for the future.

11. Lesley Ugochukwu

An off signing considering Chelsea were just days away from signing Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia. Ugochukwu has played eight minutes of Premier League action so far and could be one to keep an eye on - should he be given a chance.

10. Deivid Washington

Chelsea have a tradition of signing talented Brazilians and supporters will be hoping Deivid can be the latest to come dazzling off the conveyor belt. Arriving from Santos, securing a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge was a dream move for the 18-year-old.

A £17million fee places pressure on the youngster, who only made 16 appearances for the iconic Brazilian outfit.

9. Angelo

Similarly to Deivid, Angelo is attempting to replicate the feats of Ramires, David Luiz, Alex, Oscar et al. Chelsea have an affinity with Brazilian talent, with Angelo also arriving from Santos.

An immediate loan spell to Strasbourg as well as three caps for Brazil’s under-20 setup means he places higher than his compatriot.

8. Diego Moreira

Moreira made his debut for Benfica last season but was soon demoted to the B team after contract talks broke down. Given he is a Portugal under-21 international and, unlike anyone else who joined the club, cost nothing, the winger ranks above other relative unknowns on this list.

7. Cole Palmer

A bit of a weird one, if we’re being honest. There is no doubt Palmer has the ability, but did Pochettino really need another player of his ilk?

At 21, the world is at his feet and he was part of the squad that won the under-21 Euros in the summer. Palmer also has a point to prove after being discarded by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

6. Moises Caicedo

This was by far the trickiest player to rank. Balancing his ability with the price tag, while also guessing whether the move would work out, was challenging.

A nightmare debut against West Ham United did little to calm the nerves of carrying a £115million price tag around his neck. Is Caicedo worth what Chelsea paid? No. But impressive performances will make everyone forget about the transfer fee.

5. Robert Sanchez

Sanchez has hardly set the world alight so far but Chelsea’s desperation for a shot-stopper elevates him higher on this list. It cannot be difficult to earn the trust of Chelsea supporters after several goalkeeping displays in recent seasons.

4. Nicolas Jackson

The Senegalese international has been thrown into the action sooner than expected due to Christopher Nkunku’s injury. A horror miss against Nottingham Forest proved costly but write him off at your peril.

Jackson has all the attributes to cut it in the Premier League and, given time, could strike a chord with Chelsea fans. There were parallels between club icon Didier Drogba as recently as pre-season.

3. Axel Disasi

Like most of the squad, Disasi has endured a mixed start to the campaign. He looked exceptional against Liverpool on the opening day but crumbled a week later at West Ham.

Centre-back was a priority and, at £38million, Chelsea have not paid over the odds in today’s market. The Frenchman will likely get better as the season progresses.

2. Romeo Lavia

Lavia could end up proving a steal if and when he finally makes his Chelsea debut. It took just one season at Southampton for Man City to regret selling their academy product, with the Blues and Liverpool embroiled in a transfer wrangle for the midfielder.

At half the price, is he really any better or worse than Caicedo? Lavia could be a stalwart at the club for years to come once he recovers from an ankle injury.

1. Christopher Nkunku

The irony of this list is how, despite spending over £400million, players yet to make their debuts rank #1 and #2. A nightmare start to life at Stamford Bridge saw Nkunku ruled out for four months with a knee injury just days before the season started.

But anyone who has seen the forward play in recent seasons knows it will be well worth the wait once he returns. Capable of playing anywhere across the frontline, Nkunku bagged 57 goals in his previous two seasons for Red Bull Leipzig and should add some much-needed potency to Chelsea’s attack.
